View Full Version : Editing a video 720p - question about resolution and black bars

hey there: A quickie - I have a video, a musicvideo, shot at 720p (1280x720) That's 16:9, BUT, we wanted it even thinner, so we added black bars up and at the bottom (sorta like a 2:35 screen or such) Now, I've seen on movies that sometimes you can see that they've put black borders in a 16:9 video, due to the fact that the "regular" black from the TV (the real black, without any content) is - Black - but the "selfmade" black borders can tend to be a little brighter. Not good. So I thought of making the whole comp 1280 but instead of 720, we made it 505 or something....will the broadcasted video stretch out to "some standard size" used by them, so our guys on the video will look..kinda tall and slim? ;) that's also gonna be a problem...

My issue here could be summed up with the following question basically:

Is it safe to send a video to (insert any broadcast company here) with a video with size 1280x505, or do I have to have my video in a specific standard?

Say, i wanna make my video 1280x100 pixels..would this be sent out to the TV's in this format?

thanks in advance, sorry if it's messy, I'm in the middle a delivery here ;)

most music video shows still ask for your submissions in SD format on a tape based source. most of them are still running digibeta/beta SP but will accept miniDV.

so, I think you need to master your video at HD rez, and then be ready to make an SD (720x486/480 or 576 pal) conversion.

don't crop your output. as in leave it 1280x720 - not 1280x540 or whatever. Just insert a letterbox mask but leave it full size.

the black from the letterbox mask should probably be 16/16/16 and not 0/0/0, as per broadcast standards.
