View Full Version : Max 4 Error reading TIF files?
Tathar 04-04-2002, 03:33 AM First of all greetings to one and all. This is my first post here but I have been reading the forum from some time now.
Now that the formalities are out of the way...now for the question.
When I try to bring in a bitmap file (TIF format) into the material editor I get an "Error Reading Tif File". So I saved it out as a JPG file but this time it gives the "Memory Error". It does the same thing with a BMP file. The Tif file is 328 megs in size but I have loaded much larger images than this in Max.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks.

Any paths, multiple alpha channels saved in the tiff?

Negative. I opened the file in photo and stripped the header so there is no file paths. Also there is no multiple alpha channels.
One thing I did figure out is this. I reduced it from a 100 dpi to 72 dpi which of course reduced the size of the file considerably. It worked out fine.
I am guessing now that the file size is a factor here. If you have any other suggestions please by all means post them here.
Thanks for your reply.

um, just curious, but why would you need a 328 meg TIF file in max? What exactly are you using it for? I get scared when things get over 2 megs ;)

In reply to Toast:
I work for the engineering firm CH2M Hill (http://www.ch2m.com) and we do visualization and animations for civil designs (highways, structures, etc.). The dept. I work in is a mapping dept. and we also use a lot of (aerial photos) and then correct them ortho graphicphically. What that means in case your not familiar with the terminology is we take aerial photos and put them in their correct place in the world so they have real world coordinates.
These orhto photos (especially if they are color) are very large in pixel size depending on how large the terrain is. (Some of these models can encompass tens and even hundreds of square miles. I use these on the terrain model to make the model look like the area that appears more photo realistic. The resolution is up to one meter in size and sometimes lower depending on how far away from the terrain model we get. Most of the time the camera is several hundred feet above the terrain but we can get very close if the client wants to see the design in greater detail.
So you can see why these images are so large.
If you would like to see some of our work go to 3dnature site (http://www.3dnature.com) then look for Featured artist under the gallery on the left panel and then for Mike Ostrom's name. That is the work that we have done for Dulles International Airport in Washington D.C.
We have done visualizations for a proposed bridge at the Hoover dam, as well as and air base in Ramstien, Germany among other areas around the world.
I hope that this helped explained it well for you. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate to post a reply here or you can email me at csugg@ch2m.com.
Cheers :D

Check the color profile of you TIF-file. If it's CMYK I guess it won't load... Just convert to RGB in Photoshop. (This is atleast hte case for MAX3. Dunno 'bout MAX4 though.)

Yes I did get the problem solved. Evidently Max4 does have a file size limit for a single file. So I had to reduce the size of the file to make it accept it.
Also any of our images are RGB color profiles. We never use CMYK profiles but thanks for the input. It could have been that way for some unknown reason.
