View Full Version : Robo Chick- Critiques Welcome
kiaran 03-16-2003, 02:44 AM Hi guys (and gals),
This is my latest project. She was modeled using viewport reference images made in photoshop. She is my first attempt at modeling with Maya 4.5 Sub Division surfaces. I rendered her using an HDRI map of an outside cathedral type place. The rendering was done using Mental Ray and took about 15 mins.
Once I texture and and finish up the model I'll post up some finished pix.
Thanks for checking it out and please post your comments/critiques!

perhaps some different views of your model (front, 3/4, and a side.) and a larger image where your character feels up more of the picture.
then we'll probably be able to give better more technical feedback.
but so far i like what' you've got i just can't see much of it unfortunately.
and is it wrong of me to say that she looks cute?

Looks very much like one of the Bubblegum Crisis characters to me with a bit of a weird texture put to it. I think you also need to put her in an environment unless you are just trying to create a model here - let her tell a story. I agree with zoso - before technical crits we need more views.

looks familiar.. ;)
from that picture it looks as if you had modeled it in one solid piece. aside from that the head seems a bit big.

Here is a back view of her. Sorry about the smallness of the previous images.

almost looks like a metal toy of some kind. i like the design....simple. Hdri is a pain i think and it seems you got it to work for the most part. the thing that bothers me is that she is too perfect...she need grit and grim or scratches imho. also the hands need a little work. they need to look more mechanical to make her more cyborgian. But i like the reflections and the shoes are nifty.

I agree that the model does need some gritty grime. I'm going to whip up some textures when I get the time. The model isn't quite finished yet, I need to put more work into the shape of the head and some refinements here and there. Especially in the hands.
The end render will be much less reflective in areas and will include some sort of environment. Hopefully I'll get some more time this week to really work with her. I really like anime characters like her and she deserved more time.

I see you are modeling her as well! Nice job.

Is it my imagination or have the arms grown since the last render? I know that Priss has a whole load of useful weaponary in her arms but I'm not entirely sure that her hands should end almost at her knees. I think the helmet lacks a bit of detail as well if you're actually going for an exact replica of Priss. Looking good though.
I thought Stimpy might recognize this one :applause:

The proportions look a little off... The head seems to wide, the lower arms too long and not round enough... Where did you find the reference you used?
It's a nice start though. Also, don't worry about rendering for now, focus on modeling and materials :)

you said you made your reference image in PS. dont know if you have seen THIS (http://www.fineart.sk/anime/bbgct17.jpg) here. might help a lot with the proportions.
one thing that bugs me is that she still looks like a little tin toy. not only because of the hdr image you used but also because she seems to be made out of one solid piece of metal. maybe try to bring in some edges and/or seperate certain parts.
good luck.
