View Full Version : Changing brush angle on the fly?
DArcy1 05-23-2007, 04:23 PM Hi all
Hope someone here can answer if this is even possible in painter. I'm drawing cubes from different angles. In the real world, I just adjust my brush angle by rotating my hand :) . I've tried it with a couple of those brushes that rotate according to painting direction but can't get the results to look like this:

I did these in photoshop by adjusting the brush angle of a brush shaped like this slash: \
There must be an easier way, as I had to adjust in the brush dialog for each stroke.
I have an Intuos 3 9x12 tablet if that helps.
Thanks in advance

I think that's what the Wacom 6D art pen is for. But it would be nice if there was a keyboard alternative (ex: "[" & "]" to rotate left and right) for us users without a rotation sensitive pen.

Don't forget to set 360° for the angle range and something like 5° for the angle step.
I don't understand why photoshop does not allow this simple behavior

Hi
Thanks for the replies ! I found a brush that let me set angle to bearing, but now another question - how do you know what angle it will paint at? The cursor offers no clues, it seems to be you just pick an angle of the pen in your hand and hope it matches what you intended. If I want to do a series of cubes at gradually varying angles it's almost impossible. Am I doing something wrong?
Also a small thing, I want nice sharp edges and the bearing sensitive variants all seem to have a big brush-y feather edge...
Thanks again

Only painter X with the enhanced brush ghosting activated allows to know that...and i don't know why the enhanced brush ghosting in painter X does not disappear after starting any brush stroke (as the simple brush ghosting), it slows down everything and it is useless

The hardness of a brush in painter depends mostly of the dab type used. (the dab type of any brush can be seen in the general panel of the brush controls)
For circular dab type (and any others) the hardness can be set in the size panel of the brush controls. Just use the profile named 1-pixel edge.
For the captured dab type it depends only of the image used as brush.
Now to reply to your question there is only two ways as i know to do what you are looking for:
-you can use a captured dab type with a square as brush. The problem with this solution is any captured brush use spacing as the photoshop brushes and you will see quickly the limitation of the method painting in another direction than the one of the square...
-you can use the palette knife dab type with a very low feature...i think it is the best solution for you. Anyway, you need to know than this kind of brush has not been created for this kind of task (i mean the use a the very low feature slows down this brush but it is necessary in your case to avoid multi opacity brush stroke->it is why i increased the brush boost).
I created this two brushes, you can test them if you want. Download them from here (http://hecartha.free.fr/Test.zip)

:D hhmm I feel a bit stupid, there is an easier way which will give you more precision:
-Just use a brush using a rendered dab type like the scratchboard tool variant in pens category.
This kind of brush does not allow to set the bearing to the brush angle but it is not a problem as you just want to do some cube.
-Now you just need to use the straight line strokes option instead of the freehand strokes
