PS CS8
What would Cause this? Does this only work for Type or Vector? What about Layer Effects?

I have 6 Layers
5 Layers on top with Layer effects and different blend modes.
1 Layer on bottom, Black
how do i preserve the cool Blend modes and drop shadows and glows with merging the 5 files?

I tried Merging the five layers to one, but i lose my cool effect.

Control-Alt-Shift-N plus E should do the trick

Thanks for the response, but it's still not working yet.

I need the Merged Image to have a transparent Background, so i can move it over the Image.

Have you tried merging the layers down one at a time? Start with the top layer and ctrl-E until all layers are merged.

Alternatively if you just need to move all the stuff together, you can just link all the layers (click the box next to the visibility eye in the layer pallete for each layer you want to link) and then move them as needed.

If you are merging any layers with blend modes other than Normal, you will probably not get the result you expect. Short answer is, keep your layers separate.

If you just need to move them together, Cole's right, just link them. You can also put them in a Layer Set and transform the set.

you can't have on a single layer pixels with one type of blend mode (like dodge) and 'normal' pixels which don't affect layers beneath it

you have to find another way to accomplish your work

Don't merge your layers! Instead of this, group them into layersets :)

Thanks for the tips everyone, but The File is getting unmanagible. I am trying to merge the effect so i can make more copies of it.

Blend Mode Normal (for all copies)
Layer Effect: Outer glow

You can create layers from your blending layer effects by going to Layer / Layer Style / Create Layers. This will place all your glows, drop shadows & so on in separate layers. Then you can merge these layers down into 1 layer.

Hope that helps a little :)

Set the Layers palette to display only the layers you want to merge, and then copy the merged layers as one image to the clipboard (Control + Shift +C or go to Edit --> Copy Merged).

When you paste it will create a layer with your merged layers together, looking exactly as they did before. Of course you can no longer edit them as layers or their layer effects, so it might be worth saving this as a new file in case you need to get back to the old layers.

Alternatively you could select all the layers you want to merge in the layers palette, right-click and select "Convert To Smart Object" from the menu. This means you can always access the layers again later if you double-click on the Smart Object layer. This is only for PS CS2 and later.
