does anyone know if anyone is working on implementing l-systems in wings 3d, either via plugin or part of the core functionality?

Er, what are l-systems?

He's talking about this procedural method of creating branch-like systems. Or, at least that's what I know about it. I haven't really read much about it, but I know it's quite useful for creating tree branches, though I'm guessing the uses are much more beneficial.

And as of right now, I know of no L-systems plugins being worked on for Wings.

L-systems provide a very good procedural way to make lots of natural-type things. Not limited to trees, but often used for just that. I think that Stephane Marty, the creator of the GI renderer 'VirtuaLight' has previously made an entire modeling app dedicated to L-systems modeling (L-view I think it was called, but don't trust me on that). There are heaps of cool things about this technology.

It would be cool to have something like that in Wings, but on the other hand L-systems usually generate MASSIVE amounts of polygons, and even though Wings is THE Modeler with a capital M, it's not really built to handle that sort of scenes.

Thanks for the info! So it's a sort of random extrusion script?

Speaking of extrusions , i wonder if it would be possible to implement a path extrusion to wings?

of course you will need curves which wings dont have but i wonder if there would be some other way.

any ideas?

<edit> Just remembered the magic bevel function in Lightwave , which doesnt use curves , its more of a free form way.

tweakS + extrude = magic bevel!!!

Clacoooooooooos!!! where are you :)

Extrude along an Illustrator path?

no thats not what i meant ,

Importing a illustrator curve just to extrude along it is too much work. not to mention you cant modify the curve in wings (right?)

but if there is a way to connect extrude to tweak , that'll solve the problem :D

extract face, dup face to where its needed
fine tune roations and placements
bridge

you can use the edgeloop command to tweak extrudes also

I am well aware that this is not the fastest way

Thanks guys , but i am well aware of the alternatives , which are not really alternatives.

My workaround is the one wesamonkey suggested , but having a Autoextrude function tied the tweak might be just what we need.

Just hoping here :)

hi sheep fact. :wavey:

i'm still alive was busy with my plugins. Can't believe how long it takes me to do an html page.. (they're updated).

magic bevel :

i went there http://www.ironfoot.net/tut4.htm to understand what you were talking about. Ok.
So, if i understand well, the plugin creates geometry on the fly when moving the mouse ? From what i know, this would be very difficult to do in wings3d, as everytime you modify topology the whole structure has to be modified. So doing it on the fly, according to mouse move, seems highly unlikely.
I could be wrong, happens to me all the time  ; but this seems to me quite hard to do.

Now, the idea that has been expressed many times (and one time more here (http://pub33.ezboard.com/fnendowingsmiraifrm24.showMessage?topicID=11.topic) look my first post, end of it) is to make an extrude free command that would automatically rotate the face perpendicular to the path of extrusion.
So this would only create one section at a time, but still, could be useful.

And the good news is in the next post, as el diablo announced that he had a working version of it... So, we shall see :D :bounce:

Setting whatever the user considers to be the most useful / important of (mainly) :

Extrude Free
Move Free
Rotate Free
Rotate Normal
Scale Uniform

- as default commands, with the remainder on single stroke hkeys also offers some 'meantime' possibilities - imo :)
