BTW, I've run a quick SSS test and it took 6min to render, with a subsurface modifier set to 3 and few base polys. I've only used a SSS preset. Which tweaking would reduce render time?

Actually, you want to tweak this number in the opposite direction. Making the number smaller means less error (more accuracy) and increased render time.
For quick previews, try setting it to 1.0 . . . and for final renders, use the highest setting possible that still gives acceptable results.
