leg bone (http://home.nyc.rr.com/erwin1978/grafx/leg_bone.mb)

This is part of a project; how come the IK handle on this leg bone won't move the leg? What's strange is if I start a new project and create the same leg bones and create the IK handle, it works.

When arranging the local rotation axis of each joint, is the goal supposed to be to keep the y axis pointing up and the x and z axis respectively?

It's because Maya is not evaluating IK. It's been turned off, you need to go to:

Modify > Evaluate Nodes > Evaluate All

Then it works!

No! The aim is to get your joints to all rotate the right way. Usually you constantly aim one chosen axis (eg x) down the bone, and then just keep whichever axis is sticking out the side to be on the same side for every joint.

Eg, for every bone, point the X axis down the joint, and point the Z axis out to the left.

That's the basics anyway.
