View Full Version : 3d max without brazil?
WChestnutt 03-15-2003, 08:54 PM Hi,
just wondered whether it was worth getting 3d max without brazil?, (presuming brazil is the advanced rendering thingy) can max on it's own produce realistic renders?
and how much does brazil cost?
also, are there any great drawbacks/disadvantges to max?
Thanks,
Will

ahhhh, everyone resist the temptation!
as for ur question, max can produce realistic renders, there hav been many great images and animation before brazil. it just takes a lot longer to render and setup. if u get max 5, u will hav some GI capability, but it takes a lot longer to render.

The MAX renderer kinda sux, but there are other renderers. You don't HAVE to use brazil. I actually prefer Final Render over brazil, and here is also VRAY.
It ultimately falls into how well you use the tool. If your modeling and texturing don't stack up, then it doesn't really matter which renderer you use.

I prefer Brazil nowadays, but I've worked on many projects using the plain old vanilla scanline renderer with realistic results. There are certain limitations with the scanline renderer, but it's still very production worthy. It's very fast but not always memory efficient. The main thing is that it takes a bit more familiarity to push it hard for best results.
Think of it this way: You should move up to a new tool only once you've exhausted the existing tool. I think most people new to 3d or MAX for that part, working on their own, will take a while before they've gotten all they can out of the default renderer. When it's time to move on to something with more capabilities, then by all means check out Brazil.

Ditto to what BrandonD said. You can to a point accomplish just as much with the default scanline renderer that you can with brazil r/s. It just takes a bit longer and alot of tweaking.
I prefer brazil r/s but I have used finalRender before. Like others have said there are other render engines you can use. Like vray or even mental ray.

from: splutterfish.com (http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/sf_gen_page.php3?printer=1&page=brazil) .. a workstation + 2 render nodes is 1200$, while 4 extra rendernodes come at 750$. sounds like alot.. but compared to mentalray, it's a bargain, though it's slightly more than fR and vray.. i still prefer brazil myself, though i've never used fR (no freakin demo), and although vray is nice, my workflow just seems better with brazil.

This is from Splutterfish' website:
"The online SplutterFish Market can be accessed from our secure website. From here you can purchase Brazil r/s with Visa, Mastercard or American Express at a price of $1200(USD) for an Artist Bundle and $750(USD) for a Renderfarm Bundle.
Artist Bundle includes THREE licenses, resulting in THREE computers for rendering. One license, the Workstation-node license*, gives artist access to the Brazil r/s GUI. The other two Render-node licenses may only be used for non-GUI network rendering machines.
Renderfarm Bundle includes FOUR licenses, resulting in FOUR computers for rendering. These four non-GUI Render-node licenses* may only be used for network rendering. This bundle is geared towards larger facilities that have a farm of computers that are used soley for rendering animation frames over a network and are not used by the artist for setting up scenes and interacting with the Brazil GUI."
