Recently read through all 9 of the GUNNM novels and thought I'd try painting a version of Gally. I'm probably not even half done at this point, but I'll post more shots as I find time to work on it.

Comments are most appreciated.

Oh, its all done in Photopaint 10, including the base drawing.

Such awesome books. I finished the entire series last week. As far as the painting goes I think you're starting on the right track, but it's a bit off. The hair is one thing right off that seems off. Even in action her hair had more of a square shape. Arrghh, so hard to nail it down because her characer went through so many changes. I'll just leave it at the "i can't wait to see more" stage. :D

A good ref site is the artist home page:

very nice Brian. Unfortunately I haven't read this series of books, so I don't know anything about the character; maybe I should read them, they sound interesting...
Anyway, the painting is coming along well, I particularly like the treatment on her left arm-looks damn solid; Her shoulder as well. Also, the play of light on the top curve of her breast and the cool light on the lower part and front aspect of her ribcage is great. Hell, I like ALL of her...as I said very nice!
damn, all I've got to show today is a car...
as Taoizm sez "can't wait to see more!" Thanks for sharing, don

Tao: thanks mate. I'm not real happy with the hair myself . . . I think it maybe needs to be more jagged/clumped to read as Alita's hair. She certainly does morph quite a bit over the run of the series. This is one of my favorite drawings of her, from that link to Kishiro's page you posted:

(Brian didn't draw this one, Yukito Kishiro did)

Don: Much thanks. The Battle Angel series seems to be something of a cult classic among people who are into sci-fi and conceptual design. I've heard that James Cameron has acquired the rights to do a film based on it (whether that's good or bad, I'm not quite sure . . . ). The only hesitation I have in recommending it to people is that it can get very-turbo-ultra-violent . . . the violence always serves the story, but its enough to turn some people off.

WOW!
Brian, there's art like that in the book?
where can I get this stuff? and what is/are the exact title(s)? I guess I should start with the first one; doh!
If you could clue me in on the facts, I'd buy it today!, thanks, Don.

The American title of the series is "Battle Angel Alita" and you can order the graphic novels from the above link.

The art at the beginning of the series isn't as hot as it is in the later books . . . so if you decide to order something without going for the whole series, I'd pick up the first book as well as the third. The first intros the story and the universe, and the third is the first half of the "Motorball" story, which is what the series is most famous for and where Kishiro really hits his artistic stride.

If I had a scanner right now I'd scan some of the motorball pages for you . . . they're mindblowing . . . this guy was doing "bullet time" effects in comics way before the Matrix came out :) And if that doesn't sell you, well the first book's appeal can be summed up in three words:

Rocket. Powered. Hammer.

:D

Thanks Brian, I'm sold! i love good art supporting a good story, or even good art saving a poor story ;-) but if it's all good...WOW. I'll head to barnes n noble tonight to see if they have any of em...and check the links. Thanks, don

I've also had excellent service and results from Robert's Anime corner. Here's a link to all the BA novels. They even include all 9 with a $10 discount.

If you get the chance check out the animated version as well. It was my first anime and is still among my favorites.

bravo :applause: That head is almost dead on. Me likey. Are you going to do the machine seperations for her limbs (the panels), or keep them smooth? Arrghh, that didn't make sense... let me try again. LOL How mechanical are you going to make the body, and are you going to give her the giant butterfly knife?

reeeaaaaally nice.

I'm not sure I like the new hair better.
Are you going to draw the other arm?

Really nice! You made a huge improvement with her hair. Is that stance from one of the comics or is it your own? If so, very natural and dynamic pose. You're very good with painting. Makes me think you have experience using a real paint brush as well. Looking forward to the finished version.

Taoizm: the body she's got here is her most organic . . . I'll have some subtle seams, but really, its all supposed to be flexible artificial muscle. And no knife, I'm afraid :) But I may give her near hand a plasma halo, like she's just punched through somebody . . . maybe scorch her glove there a little.

Frinsklen: the new hair looks more like the character, but I do think it still needs work. And yes, I do plan to add her other arm, swung slightly in front of her.

koko: thanks!

fellah: was going to work more on it last night but my wacom stylus is dying . . . will probably be a while before I get a chance to finish this one.

DigitalSkorpyon: The pose is mine, I sketched it in Photopaint. I have a little bit of painting experience, but I never spent enough time at it to get very good . . . it did help me learn how to block in shapes and pick good colors though.

By the way is your work solarium 2d or 3d?

balistic

"Solarium" is all 3D at the moment. I need to get back to that one and finish it.

For those who have no idea what he's asking about:
