ok i try to participate in this challenge. and hope to finish it this time ;)

heres a first look at my backplate:

i painted it together from different images because i wasnīt satisified, with the images i found on the web.

so hereīs the first concept scribble... the design of the buildings will change for sure as i am start modelling.

@Arioch: thnx. i think the backplate is the most important thing to do a compositing.
@lildragon: thnx. this is a really cool challenge topic and i think it will fit perfect in my reel.
@buggy: i canīt draw! ;) itīs just Pshop with Wacom Intous A4

so hereīs a link to quick and dirty test of the campro mapping.

C&C please!!!

good job on the camera projection mov. sure is a lot of depth in there..

can you post a wire of your geometry ?

LXStalker
03-17-2003, 12:42 PM
stimpy: hereīs your wire... itīs quit simple. but it works great for now. iīll refine it for later use as shadowmatte object.

alexx
03-17-2003, 09:01 PM
hehe.. nice start alex..

btw.. have you been @ h5 when eric chauvin was in?
cant remember anymore..

concerning the movement.. looks really cool and with nice depth..
but in the backplate the color contrasts and color values seem a bit off to me..
the foreground and background hills obviously seem to be of the same material.
but the front ones are very bright and colorful..
i would suggest to get them a bit closer together (not too close to keep the poi in the front)

keep up this time :) great start and i know you are a hell of a comp fiddler to tweak your images to great realism

cheers

can someone tell me how mister LX did this effect....in the back ground you don't have any strecth in the forest...i am just stunned.

I would like to know how to achieve this quality.... :) please! TEach Me! :)

Stimpy
03-17-2003, 09:12 PM
iīd guess seperated fore and background.. if i understood your "stretching" question correctly

alexx
03-17-2003, 09:13 PM
since lxstalker seems not to be online i might answer:

that kind of effect is done with a cam projection.
you set up a camera in maya that matches the background image in perspective.
now you roughly model the geometry in the back image like in his wireframe.
now u use the camera you set up to to project the background material on the geometry.
now you can use another perspective camera to travel through your scene (in a limited range.. otherwise the projection will be visible).
the harder part about it is (if the background was one single image) to paint the image parts in photoshop in a way, that you wont see the foreground on the further away parts as you travel.. you have to paint them away a bit..
if you use different part for for/mid/background that is not needed that much..

cheers

Hello
Nothing to point, very good overall color in a nice backplate and fantastic camera movement with lots of depth. Are you working in Maya? The concept is great:bounce:
As you said, you have a very good start for this challenge with that image.

@alexx: Nice avatar:)

first of all: thank you guys for your c&c

Alexx already explained the camprojection method in detail so i have to thank him to save me the time explaining it ;)

@alexx: no, Eric Chauvin already left H5 when iīm started working there. But I think it was Tom H. who did some testing on campros, so i got it there. ;) Thnx to Tom!
concerning the backplate. yourīre right, the very far hills and the closer green hills are on the same object iīm going to seperate them later.
The color values and brightness of the background hills are taken from the original foto. iīll keep them for now. ;)

@zepedro: yes itīs done in Maya. But you can use the technique in every other package which allows you to project your image with a camera projector.

Nice stuff,
Great back ground you have there.
The method you use sounds really interesting, as fas as I think I understand it, though:D
seems this FX challenge has a great topic this month.

I c you also have those quite comon alien architecture... simple aerodynamic geometie.... It would be really cool if you did something different, like a laboratory that is well camouflashed. I mean, they don't want that we know they are here, don't they?

Well anyways good luck:cool:

Hey! LX and alexx,

now regarding MAya do you use Maya Live! or just you create a plane etc???

:D your stuff is so cool LX i am craving to do this kinda stuff :)

alexx
03-18-2003, 10:24 PM
i can only speak for me but i never understood how maya live works.. maybe i should have a look at it again since it is several years since i had a try with it then.. in thoise days i was not even able bringing the turorial scenes to a good end..
even since some ppl did that and had other good results i always stuck to 3d equalizer..

and: no: for that kinda shot yu dont need any 3d matchmoving tool..
you just take the back image and you do the movement yourself..

have a look on 3dgarage.com.
i think they did a complete set of videos just about cam projections..
it is way easier to create than a 3d matchmove.. really :) (still tricky though)

cheers

alexx & LX in absence

lx: i think you have to do a tutorial on that one

LXStalker
03-18-2003, 10:25 PM
@cobraX: thnx you. itīs quite simple. no maya live is needed.. if you like to get a first look in the technique hereīs a link how it works in maya:

ok since this is a WIP Challenge hereīs a WIP image:

i started modelling the details and wanted to share it with you.

itīs just a rough comp without shadow receiving background and quickndirty light setup.

after the modelling iīll do the shadows on the backdrop and then the textures for the buildings. I think iīm going to paint the shadows on the backdropobjects. this the fastest way in this type of shot to get good looking shadows.

C&C on modelling please.

wouldn't it be faster to use the geomtry you used for the cammapping and use that as a matte/shadow object for recieving shadows

good looking Structures btw ;)

LXStalker
03-19-2003, 03:49 PM
alexx:

Equinoxx: no. as you can see on the image with the wire on it, i did the objects very very rough. itīs much more work to refine them, so that they match the rocks borders, than painting the shadows on the rough objects... but the result will be the same.
in fact it would be better to do it with shadowmatte objects if i had moving objects like spaceships in it, which cast moving shadows.. but for the shot iīm planning this isnīt the case. Letīs see how it works. I want to finish this thing until Sunday so i have to save time ;)

Aw man, it's over. LXstalker can quit now. Dammit.:annoyed:

Really, really awesome stuff.

One thing I can suggest, for those looking to match shadows, is that rather than matching the geometry, do as I did on a recent composite (http://www.altyna.com/examples/scimitar.avi) ... render out a separate shadow layer (shadow alpha in LW, don't know for other apps) and use Displacement Map in AfterEffects to "ripple" the shadow over small details. That's how I plan to work the shadows in mine, to minimize the modelling.

Although, judging from LXstalker's work, modelling isn't a bottleneck for him.....

how are you going about adding in extra geometry? ie is all that modelled or is some of it displacement? Polygons/NURBS/Sub-D's? you've made it very quickly! v. v. nice!

LightFreeze
03-20-2003, 12:20 AM
stunning stuff

one crit though is your foreground rock seems slightly out of focus when compared to the green patch seen through the arch on the right, could be wrong though

LXStalker
03-20-2003, 09:59 AM
hope i can show you new stuff this evening.

rendermaniac: no displacement used.. itīs all modelled with simple polies. iīve only modelled details on the sides of the buildings which are facing the camera to save time. the buildings are really quick and dirty, and theyīre only looking good from this distance.

lightfreeze: youīre right. itīs the map. have to sharpen it a little bit.
havenīt seen this before thnx ;)

How about replacing the sky and do some colour matching on the rocks?

LXStalker
03-26-2003, 04:37 PM
mastermind: would this improve the image ? i donīt think so.. itīs the original sky color from the same picture as the rocks. i like the contrast. or does it look odd to you ? but thnx for sharing your idea!
;)

alexx
03-26-2003, 05:04 PM
alex.. DOH ! *drool*

mastermind is right concerning me with the rocks..
i know it is a "real" pic but sometimes nature looks odd..

i would suggest taking out a lot of the bright red/orange color of the rocks..
(or tune in a lot of red/orange in the buildings :)

something like that would look more real to me imho:

cheers

Well Im thinking big, but you already did big. What about some people walking about. It would look amazing if you did. Adding to the scale and the environment. How does it look on a bigscreen? hehe.

Rob:D

-JB-
03-28-2003, 05:02 PM
This is really looking amazing man...

I'd suggest introducing more of the orange colour of the rocks into the buildings. They seem highly reflective, at least enough to pick up a lot more colour of the surroundings.

I'd keep the saturation of the plate if I were you, it feels right..

Once again, nicley done..

Mescalito256
03-28-2003, 06:13 PM
I agree with JB, there sould be some diffuse red light bouncing off the environment and lighting the buildings. I might help integrate the CG into the background a little better.

The saturation on the rocks does not bother me. I've seen rock formations in even deeper reds around Arizona. (Just google up some pictures of Sedona and you'll see what I mean)

Great job so far!

I'm kidding, of course.
