Disclaimer: Please forgive me for I am a newbie and know not what I do.........

I was looking over many of the tutorials as well as the information in the C4D books and a few questions are nagging at me. I would like to know if someone could give me a glimpse into what their workflow or procedure is when approaching a model. In other words what do you do when you change say a cube into an organic shape? Do you edit points, rely heavily on extrusion, magnet, move each point or edge by hand? A prime example would be Squidinc's Spider Progress http://www.m1k3.com/cgremote/spiderprogress/ Looking at the images I can not figure out the workflow that was involved in making the abdomen and thorax more round. When I try to do it they come out looking more boxy. Also what is involved in making the circular depressions in the thorax where the legs attach? I have been trying all manner of techniques yet I can not get the hole to be round. It always turns out square with rounded corners. I know in Wings for example I could simply select the polys and then SMOOTH and they will turn into a circular shape.

These are just a few of the things I am trying to comprehend and having encountered the problems I have noted that the C4D books themselves really don't go into so much as they do the general tool executions. Does any of this make sense? Thank you in advance for your help.

I think that what u should/could try is to tweak the vertex points a bit, at least that always helps me whenever my round edges come out square. good luk!

Hi Mentat, are you able to view the scene file? or are you using a version older that R8?

basically the roundness of the model is created by adding the cube into a hypernurbs object ( I'll updated the spider progess thingy with a little more pointers )

Hi Squidinc! Yes I downloaded the C4D source file. I really don't see anything much different than what I was doing but for some reason my objects don't round as much as yours did. And the big question is how did you create the the round holes in the thorax where the legs attach? That really eludes me. By the way that is an awesome model! Very simple, clean, and it renders beautifully!

I just figured out why my object was so blocky looking. When I attempted to subdivide I was subdividing the original 3d cube object. However when I subdivide with Hypernurbs Subdivide checked the object divides SMOOTHLY ...no blockiness! One down....many more to go lol!
