View Full Version : 2D character animation
ddjix 03-15-2003, 02:29 PM Hello guys. I really need some advice on this one. I have a little 2D character animation to produce. Very basic stuff. Let’s say for a move that would last 1 second, i have 6 frames. ( Frames 1, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25). The final output is 25 frames per second. How would i make the move fluent and kinda smooth. In other words how would i make AE create the missing frames ? Or is there a blending technique that would smooth out the animation and make it just like if we drew the whole 25 frames ?( interpolation ? ) What technique would you suggest in order to get the one second done with only 6 frames ? Any help will be greatly appreciated since we have to deliver this on Monday.
Thanx in advance for any help.

i don´t know how complex your character is but the one thing i´d really suggest is inbetweening those 6 frames to 12 so you´d be at (almost) 12.5 fps what will look perfectly smooth (as far as there are no pans or zooms - but i guess if then you´ll do those in ae so that will be no problem at all), and it´s only 6 frames. other thing would be using those 6 frames and inserting a hold position somewhere (wouldn´t really work if it´s a walk cycle).
using frameblending with this sort of animation would really suck i guess because all lines will "ghost" very visible.
i guess it would help everyone a lot if you could post a picture of your style / character?

Is it pixel or vector ?
- If it's vector, try to make shapetweens in flash and export it as a png sequence
- If it's pixel, either draw the missing frames yourself or i know there's a plugin for AE that does advanced motionblur and frameblending, have to look it up doh.

Thanks guys for all the help... I got it done with 8 frames a sec with motion blur and frame blender... Worked like a charm and i got a big fat check... It was a great experience since i'm almost only into 3D ( lightwave ). Cel shaders would'nt have done the trick... First time working with traditional illustrators and all... Take a look at this software, looks like i'm gonna get it:bounce:
