Hi.
This is a personal project I've been meaning to do for a while now ^^
I'm starting on the Manticore. I'm doing most monsters in more normal poses. Here is the manticore drinking water.

Upon drawing this sketch, I realised I should do several studies and research for theese monsters (I'll do others after this one of course, they will also require studies and researches), so I though, why not keep them all in one thread so I get more order, and so people can help me out on the studies, so I know I do them right :)
I'll also let you know a little how I think when drawing/painting creatures, just in case it turns out great and people wonder about this :p
Research:
Enviroment- The manticore originates from India, and is said to reside in the jungles, so the eniroment would be more jungle-ish.
Apparance- It is described as a red lion, whit a humanoid face and a tail whit many spikes that can shoot in any direction. It also has 3 rows of sharp theeth, and its also said to be swift. Now, India is a little cold for lions thin fur, so the fur would be think as a tigers fur. The manticores main defence metchod are the spines on its tail, and it is said to be swift, so why would it need those huge powerfull paws like tigers and lions have? Wouldnt they be less practical for swift movements? I'll make them slimmer, like a cheeta allthough that probably got nothing to do whit the paws. I'll ignore the "fact" that the Manticore makes a trupet-and-pipes-like sound, not sure if this affects how it would probably look.
Studies:
-Lion
-Tiger
-Comparing human facial musculature to feline facial musculature (hopefully this is possible)
-Cheeta
-Indian jungle

I'm using "An Atlas Of Animal Anatomy For Artists" as a heavy reference source.
I've also found some images of big cats drinking that I'll be using as reference. I won't let them just lay around in my Mammalian reference folder ^^
-Tiger (http://philip.greenspun.com/zoo/tiger-drinking.jpg), Lion (http://www.wildherps.com/travels/Africa2000/images/lion_drinking_big.jpg), Lion 2 (http://www.wildnetafrica.co.za/wildlife_gallery/images/liondrink9.jpg), Cheetah (http://www.naturephotographers.net/buserimages/0713-03.jpg), Cheetah 2 (http://homepage.mac.com/rstacy/%20images/pages/cheetahs/2006/cheetahs_022406E19.jpg), Cheetahs (http://www.safarinow.com/files/images/travel-guide/Hoedspruit/300%20wide/Cheetah-drinking---Mpumalan.jpg)
