View Full Version : chrome
Hi Guys
Just a quick question about making realistic chrome.
I have modelled a camping gas stove and just started to texture and wondered if anybody had any pointers towards this.
How does fresnel play a part?
Basic question which has been up before I know but would appreciate
any help
Thanks

Fresnel plays not so much of a part when working with a super reflective surface like Chrome, though you might wish to add a little bit. All that bhodinut fresnel is is the incidence angle of the surface to the viewer. In real life surfaces get more reflective the higher the incidence angle (notice that a window when viewed obliquely becomes more reflective than when you at it straight on). The gradient in the fresnel material refers to the angle, one end is 90 degrees to the viewer, the other is facing the viewer (0 degrees). A lighter color in the Reflection channel gives you a greater ammount of reflection.

Hi, if your not so concerned with making the chrome yourself, an artist that goes by Cartesius has posted an excellent preset in the free stuff section in the Renderosity C4D forum. It has a bit of bump mapping to it which may not suit your needs but it can always be removed. Good luck! -- dano
for real real simple chrome that doesnt look bad just turn off the color channel and turn on the reflection.

Remember that, since chrome is by definition highly reflective, it won't really look like much if there's nothing for it to reflect. An environment map can help here.
