xynaria 04-03-2002, 09:02 PM Ford Consul Classic 315 circa 1960
Pretty much redone and hopefully close to final version. Interior shots to follow later. Back on to character stuff now.
Criticisms very welcome. :)

:buttrock: What a nice image. Really no crits here other than the dark front wheel well. Makes the tire look like it's seperate from the car. I'm expecting to see a hint of the suspension.
looking good, nice n smooth n creamy feel like old cars paint looks, as in fact do the majority of the materials, especially the lights on the rear
its got a nice feel of being a pic of a car rather than a 3Drender of a car :)
superb attention to detail :D
crits are :
looks a little over exposed, perhaps too much light is in there (could be my lap-top moniter)
theres a little light patch on the top of the tyre closest to us, and theres a little pinch on the arch curve above that (although without reference to check i could say that could be there of course)
looking at the front wheel in comparison to say the headlights i'd say they look a little small...but again they may be correct...
perhaps the shadows need a little tightening or the map bias lowering...try using spots as opposed to an omni to make the shadow map more efficient...although i love the natural gloom underneath the car
and if i was being real piccy i'd nip around it in Photoshop and smooth out the side window frames under the roof and perhaps nip out the odd reflection (those being on the front render, the one on the top of the rear door panel above the handle and on the rear view the one just behind the front wheel arch)
its so nice tho i'd wanna play with it, u know, lower it a little, french the tail lights, drop a rover v8 in etc :lol

I think it will be better if you change you backgroud .
hmm...this place is getting a little dry on feedback....
perhaps its a little too popular....
so when can we expect an update ;)

AJ.. right now .. if a little late.. file got corrupted.
Taoizm .. there actually is basic suspension unit there and is just about visible on my monitor.. which is pretty dark anyway.. I have shown thes+e to others who can see it clearly and I guess that's the eternal problem of discrepancies between monitor settings.
Halo ..thanks indeed for a very constructive and perceptive crit and for pointing out some things I'd ceased to see anymore. I've corrected the geometry and you were indeed right about the wheels.. well spotted .. I'd over reacted when reducing the size from an earlier too big version. I've also cleaned these up slightly in PS though at that size, some attempts don't eradicate all problems.. as soon as I can spare my comp for the time I'm going to do some at least 3000+ renders because it seems to now stand up better when done larger. (See if you can also spot the new details added. :p) As for the too much light.. this is exacerbated because both the car and BG are white.. If I render the car as another colour it doesn't appear overexposed at all so I'm happy (ish) to live with the current compromise.
Jodkid... There is purposely no BG in this as this was purely a modelling, and to an extent texturing exercise, and I saw nothing to be gained by contriving some setting to put it in at this point.

I think he meant a backround that had a tad bit of contrast, like a slight gradient or some such. you lose a lot of the car in the backround. I think you'd gain the same thing you did by texturing and lighting. Otherwise oGL screencaps would been enough ;)
That's a great looking model though. I like seeing old classic style cars instead of the new sporty/luxery types that seem to be the norm. I am working on an old Fiat right now personally. It's a good modeling challenge for sure.

first of all: great work.
But I want to ask you with wich kind of render did you render the pix (brazil, finalrender, etc.) because I want to improve my own render performance but I dont have a clue wich renderer I have to use.

looks very nice, realy nice model and render.
just one thing that i think looks a bit odd is the size of the wheels, i cant help feel there a bit on the small size, but i could be wrong.
top stuff all the same;)
How badly f**ked was it all Xy? Save 20 times a minute! If you lost all of this I would cry like a baby for you (That's the only time I'm gonna do it though... okay?) :p :p :p
Model is excellent, renders are luxurious. The question remains - when are you gonna get the job waiting for you out there!
Walk before you can run, then jog for a little bit - then you can run, once you can run - don't do it on a treadmill.
Convoluted - but I hope you appreciate my metaphor ;)

What is the BEO on the number plate?
Are you from yougoslavia? Beograd? :)
Your car is very very clean! it's one of the best i've seen!
Bravo!

Thanks very much for the comments folks.. they are much appreciated. :)
lowdown...fair point and I can't really argue against it. The very early versions were with a gradient b/g and whilst it is true it did kind of allow the model to stand out more.. aesthetically it wasn't working for me and I prefer how it is now.. just a 'feel' thing I guess.
mogdodt: It's the alpha of Brazil (www.splutterfish.com)
mushroomgod: Pass I'm not sure about this one as I haven't got a really good side reference for this. With what I have got.. the last version does seem about right.. I did a pass with them slightly bigger but they did start to seem large. Going by some book photos I've seen they are on the small side in real life. The reference I had for this was poor by any standards but now it's in a vaguely feasible state I intend to get in touch with the owners group to try and secure much better reference so I might be able to produce a far more accurate version.
AJ: It took out last three updates but I managed to eventually use replace to get updated stuff into an earlier incarnation. Still trying to find that job and fending off the ever present lure of homelessness :p I think I kind of get the metaphor and this did turn out to be a bit more ambitious than planned but it was always gonna be work to get my 3D at a comprable level to my 2D. I'm still tying to find my level but every time I think I have it decides to go for a run around the room.
Totich: Thanks! I'm from London and my only realtionship with Beograd is that my last girlfriend was from there. The only bit of the number plate that has any relevance is the EO which indicates that the car would have been registered in the town where I was born.

Thanks. :)
Theres' a few things I might want to do in the future that may involve it, but right now I have other things to attend to. Unfortunately in it's present state, animating it on my comp isn't a realistic option, even if I resort to using standard Max materials in the main and only raytracing the glass. Because there is no bump mapping, so all details are modelled, it's weighing in pretty heavily at the mo and I'm stuck on a pII 450. :D

Totich: That (unless I'm surrealistically wrong here) is a really, really, really old UK plate... except I don't think you get the letters I, J or O as they're too close to 1 & 0 (although the sixties' plates may have been different). I've even seen plates so old it's just two letters and a 3 digit number.
Personally I'll always prefer the old Ford Mustang but nothing, nothing compares to a VDub Beetle.
Nice work though
