Hi all,
I was hoping someone could tell me why I can not open Maya 4.5 files (.ma), created a Windows environment, in Maya 4.5 for the Mac.

I can however open a Maya 4.0 files (.ma), created a Windows environment, in Maya 4.5 for the Mac - which does not help me at the moment.

Is their a mel script or some sort of trick that I am missing, because the documentation that came with Maya 4.5 says that these files should be interchangable between plateforms, as long as they are saved in the .ma format.

Thanks for any help.

I open 4.5 files on both platforms all the time. It doesn't matter which platform created it. I think your problem is with the returns of the .ma file and you should be able to clear that up with BBedit or the toUnix command from the terminal.

thanks for the response bigfatMELon,

I'm not sure what you mean by returns - what should I be looking to change in the text?

Thanks

Each platform has different methods for specifying when a line ends in an ASCII file. As ou might guess, knowing where lines end in an .ma file is very important to Maya. My guess is that your file's "end of line" characters aren't being properly recognized and this should be fixable in any just about any text editor.

thanks man!

The files are opening now.

Say, would I be correct in assuming that I could then open an object built in Maya 4.0 and open it in Maya 4.5 using the same method you mentioned above?

Thanks again for your help.

Of course. This isn't an issue of versions at all. You can open any .ma file on any platform when the returns are properly read and you can open 4.0 files in 4.5.

I have a new problem. Some of my Maya .mb files will not save as .ma. I get the following message: File contains unknown nodes or data. To preserve this information the current file type cannot be changed. Is there any way around this?

hmm.. there was a thread about this soem days ago.. i think the solution was either deleting the nodes (mental ray or renderman or other stuff not supported by your current license) or creating a new scene, save as .ma, import the other scene and save again
but better check the old threads..

cheers

ahh alexx, that's brilliant! importing the .mb into a .ma and saving worked perfert - thanks
