Until recently i've only been modeling with Strata 3.7. I've grew used to the way of thinking that i knew the program very well and could figure out the best way to model something w/ the fewest poly's, but now i finally purchased 3ds max. I just started working w/ it this week and i'm extremely frustrated. I've gone through a couple of the tutorials that are in the tutorials book that come with the program, but i don't feel like i'm progressing at all. I know i'm just begining, but i'm not used to being this frustrated with any program. My main goal at the moment is to learn the modeling tools. What is the best tutorial/method to accomplish this? :hmm:

Straight poly modeling in MAX is pretty top of the line. There's a wealth of resources here and elsewhere on the net to learn from. If you're interested in subdivision poly modeling, then definitely check out the Meshtools scripts. They give you excellent poly tools. If you're interested in patches then you'll want to look for surface tools tutorials. It's quite a bit different than poly modeling, but definitely has its place.

Are you having any particular difficulty? We can't help with broad questions, but can answer specific ones.

And by the way, next time you post you might want to use a subject title like "Learning Modeling" and not "I need help." Think about it, if we didn't summarize our posts then the whole board would have subjects like "Help me now!" and "Need Help Pleeez"

well, exactly what are you trying to do, I made some simplistic startup tutorials on my site. And some scripts to help start modeling faster.... You are welcome to peruse them at your liesure....

I guess what i'm asking for the most is where should i start? Their tutorials are a bit random and the amount of options you have in max (compaired to what i was used to) is overwhelming. I feel like i have no direction because i don't know where to begin and that's what i'd like advice on.

At the simplest level, polygon modeling usually starts with a Box. Convert to Editable Poly or add an EditMesh modifier. MAX is very procedural so you can store a series of modeling operations in a modifier and go back and change them as you wish.

The tutorials that ship with MAX are pretty broad and should at least cover the basics of poly and patch modeling.
