View Full Version : not showing off, but at least show
thondal 05-16-2007, 08:11 PM Ok, wasn't sure what to call this thread. But i was just thinking. Why couldnt we(some) at least try to make an effort in posting some works/making some work done here at cgtalk. Just to show people, not to show off, but to show people that Blender people are not a toy, but a serious and proffesional tool for 3d artwork. Maybe a few 3d works, and perhaps an animation. Could be a thought. If everyone, or at least a few tried, it might turn out to be a good thing?
or?

why not join one of the cg challenges and use blender in there , as I did once ( not showing of here ;) just stating a fact.), to show people how blender can be used also showing the work flow.

Okay. Whip me up a big-ass 17th century ship with all the riggings and sails all flapping in the wind. And set it on fire while sailing out in a stormy sea while sinking it with some sorta large aquatic creature like a giant sea cucumber.
Should keep you busy...

Okay Thondal, set a good example and post some stuff. Everyone will surely follow.
Seriously, I get the feeling blender gets more positive attention lately than it ever has. As far as I know of anyway. May be due to the fact that 2.43 was released with all these new features some time ago or the fact that I use it at work nowadays, but still.
Why care about proving this or that? If people want to see "us" as toys, you mean blender I think, let them. We know blender is capable enough to do some serious shit, and we don't need, I don't need it for sure, someone's approval to define blender as qualified enough.
If people who feel that way want to call blender bad, let them keep their head in the sand all they like. Blender's still gonna be there, professional or not. Who knows, maybe someday there'll be a stampede and it's going to get pretty noisy in there too.
Join a challenge as ysvry says, or just redirect them to the http://blenderartists.org/forum/ tons of GOOD stuff in there. stuff which isn't any less than a lot of stuff you find over here. Sure there's plenty of crap too, search around, there's tons of crap from other apps around here as well.
Or start building that ship and make that animation, because NTmonkey, what you suggest is perfectly possible in blender.

To organize this project. I would if i could but i dont know that much about blender at this time. Im still in basic modeling and am tied up for the moment. Still i could do some looking around and see what i can find for pictures of an old wooden vesil. May be some sinking pictures or some thing, dont know yet.
Some questions i have though:
What kind of boat would we use for this?
Is there anyone that could do the animation on this scale?
Do we need any thing speacail, like an other program that might be of use?
Are we going to set up an E-mail chain to get this off the ground? (this could be our "home" talk area)
Should i set up a sharing photobucket account for this project to share images/ideas?
Those are some of my thoughts, others are by far needed!
umm, well i have a homepage this 'project' could make use of, and i could help with modeling.. :p

I'm a blender newb myself but I wouldn't mind throwing my hat into the ring. The other day I was watching Pirates 2 and found myself looking at some of the CG and thinking, "hmm, I think I can figure out how that was done." This seems like a good project to put that claim to the test :)

fktt that sounds awesome. If you could would you be able to set up a forum or some thing of that matter? Don't know yet but it may seem i will have to organize this project, well..... i will do what i can for that matter. So i guess if any one could get me there email in a PM and i will get back to you as soon as possible (most likely in the form of an email, and with in the day)
I will tell you that i do have limited Blender experience but i will do my best to make this work, or get off the ground for that matter. I am open to all input at this time and if any one else is more "suited" for this position i have no problem with him/her taking my place. Because as i said i have limited blender experience.
I have started doing some research on this already and i am think about a wooden ship of some sort at this time (can be changed and i wouldn't mind at all) Here are a few images to get some idea.

Just a warning: I'm reading through the 'landlubbers guide to ship modeling' tutorial and it should be doable for an intermediate Blender user, but any noobies will probably have a tough time translating it into Blender in their minds. It will also require careful setup of any reference plans.

Yeha!
That listens very interesting. :bounce:
If this "ship thing" is realy going to happen, I will be definitely in!
But becuase the idea was to boost the presence of Blender in CGTalk, I think this should be organized in CGTalk too (compared to a seperate forum).
Maybe it would be a good idea to run this thing in the Collaborative team projects (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=73) section on this Forum. So this way it would draw a lot more attention.
Well thats just what I think.
Cheers!

Thats a huge help!! thank you greatly for that. Im sure it will help out a ton in this progect. Still we done have a base line for a story plot. Although i have gotten one idea from some one (i can email it to you once i get the ok) so we will see what every one thinks. I will put that under an idea as well. Also would you like to help out if so email me or senf me a PM?
Thanks again.

hahaha so you would like to help, alright then! If you could send me an email (tengwar3@aol.com) about what your strong points are inblender i could see were to put you when we get this off the ground. It seems like a lot of work so we will see. And the second thred in Collaborative team projects (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=73) would be awesome. I will tell you that i disagree with your thought about haveing it all in CGS because i dont know how big this will get and with an other site (i dont know for sure yet) we could have sections for animation descutions, modeling ideas, and so forth. Though its still a thought its to early to tell what we are going to do yet. Thanks for your input and this is all still up for grabs at that. Also if you could email me about your blender strong points and such i will be able to know what to do with who. Im still getting people in this progect. Thanks again my friend!
allso remember to "go fish" in the blenderartists.org, and mostly for people with (at least?) intermediate skills, otherwise, it might become too hard for 'em?

I've been Googling for hours to find free plans of Nelson's HMS Victory with no success.

Well its not set in stone yet so we could have a cross breed of ships if the need comes. Its highly unlikely to find "full" ship lay outs. But i think ether way works. Also if you could email me the pics i would be able to build a library of images that will greatly help us out.
Heres is a list of what i have so far
1 story board writer, and 1 Uv mapping person. There are a few others that i am waiting for there "classification" if you know what i am saying.
I (meaning we as a group) still need some modelers, animators, texture artists and i think CaptenBarbosa and ValiantHalibut may be put under research if they would like that (you can do more than one part of this if you like)
Besides that i dont think we really appointed anyone to lead this project i kind of stepped up so if any one wants to Co-Op or take my place because you have experience just let me know. I dont want this to seem like a dictator ship. Thanks guys.

I could continue researching as well as do some modeling maybe. The reason I was looking for HMS Victory plans in particular is because there are tons of photos of it on the net that we could use to fill in bits missing in any plans we may find, as well as serving as a texture reference. (+ the fact that I need to make a ship eventually anyway for a project I have simmering in my head...)
[Edit] I just thought of something... All modelers will have to work on the same scale somehow, you don't want to import a mast or cannon into Blender only to realize that it's the size of a toothpick compared to the hull or some other part.:D
indeed.. btw again check out the other forum, on my page ive greated a few threads there that i think are important! :)

well i'm pretty good with PS for textures and i can start on the sketches. Lets get the ideas out. i really like the monster vs the ship thing.m huge squid thing...may be a suqid in a big armored shell. come on people all ideas even if it sounds stupid. spit it out
well, feel free to draw a concept of your squid thing and post the concept in to the forum (http://drumsofwar.110mb.com/site/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewforum.php?15) i created, made there a concept art category too.. ;)

fktt: I registered over at your forum. Seems like a good spot to start talking about details.
My concept for the project falls a ways away from what has already been discussed and I would like to get some ideas about it. Here's the teaser:
On a world covered by a dense cloud civilizations travel on giant, floating Drifters. Pirates who prowl the gaseous seas prey on these slow moving behemoths with their light, fast moving Skimmers. The burden of protecting the Drifters falls to Cloud Runners - mercenaries or former pirates who use their own Skimmers to keep the pirate threat at bay.
It's a different take on things but I like the idea of getting away from the "Pirates of the Carribean" setting with an original concept. The world is more fleshed out but then that's just the teaser ;)
ok, ive allready got a picture of drifting/flying land with a waterfalling from it in my head.. :S

I kind of like the 17th century feel though. It doesn't have to be about pirates just because it's the right time period, perhaps an international power struggle. The Battle of Trafalgar type thing. I don't mind if it's sci-fi/fantasy, but I'm just not seeing FUTURISTIC sci-fi. I'm thinking something more like Gulliver's Travels than Treasure Planet if we want to go that route. Just my two cents.
[Edit] Erm, fktt? I can't seem to find a way to register on your forum...

I'm not imagining sci-fi in the traditional "Spaceships and Starfighters" vein. In fact, I don't really think I'm imagingin sci-fi at all :)
I suppose the best way to describe the genre would be "fantasy." An alternate world version of our 17th Century. Check out the larger world description at the Drums of War forum here (http://drumsofwar.110mb.com/site/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?18). That'll give you a better idea.
Of course, that's just one suggestion.
@barbosa: ok.. thanks for noticeing.. im sure there used to be one on the front page.. weird.. i changed the "welcome message" its in the uper-left corner of the middle-table of the site.. hope that helps.. :)

SoOoOo the other day i walked into my living room and my lil bro was looking at some cartoon, which i usualy pay no mind to his cartoons, but i seen some cool clouds and spaceships. I sat down and look at it just cause theres alot of cool ideas and concepts. The show is called Skyland. Here is a link to a little video.
Skyland Teaser Trailer (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8766517616680057796)
The backgrounds are pretty cool i think but i think we would want more of a dark scary atmosphare. As for getting an idea for sci-fi/fantasy/17th Century. Are you thinking of like floating ships with 17th Century cannons that shoot plasma (that would be soooo cool)?
go read the oter forum, now!

05-22-2007, 06:18 AM
Yeah, I'm not getting through anymore. It worked fine only a couple hours ago, then I had to take a phone call and -wham!- nothing.
If the problem is that I'm in the USA then we might need to look at a different option for hosting a forum and associated content because I'm fairly certain that I won't be the only person to have this problem.
carnageRPM: That looked nifty but it's not exactly what I was talking about. When you think about "clouds" try to divest yourself from your preconcieved ideas and imagine them in more of the Cloud Giant Planet sense. Check out the post on the DrumsOfWar forum for more information on how the world is structured.
One thing I really did have in mind was keeping a sense of 17th Century technology and culture just in a drastically different setting.
Edit: It's not my call, though - that's just one idea. Sorry, I tend to get carried away when I'm enamored with an idea like this :)
