Has anyone got experience out outsourcing this type of thing? I have a couple of mins footage that require a garbage matte. I could do it myself, just wondered if there was some sort of an inexpensive route. A recommended compay, or 'remote' service that someone's heard of..

There are may in India, just google you will come up with a list. Most of their services are affordable. Look for freelancing or small business. Stay away from those with "impressive credits" as they tend to be will be expensive. Good luck.
Hope that help.

I have a price in mind so this could be an option, for the project I'm doing it really it's fairly easy work just labour intensive - a specific recommendation would be useful...

Well, talk to Vimal Margaserry (vimalsagars @ yahoo . com) be nice and hamble. If he cannot do it he may be able to give you some few connections - it's all about networking. All the best.

Personally I would find a local company or freelancer to do the roto. Someone you can talik to face to face and point out troubles with the roto in person ("Fix this this this"). There are roto/paint companies poping up all over the place.

Every time I have roto coming from Taiwan or India, we end up redoing 75-95% of it. The trouble is distance, not the country itself. How do you explain "make it better" over the phone? Especially when they are getting payed shit in the first place to do it. Pay shit and you get shit. Find someone local no matter where you are, even if your in China, don't go find someone in India or if your in India don't go find someone in China.

People you can talk to face to face are a usually more accountable about their actions and what they deliver to you. When they are far away or in another country, they can easily play the "no speak english" card (ie... I understand you, but I'm going to play dumb).

That is a good point. I/we have experienced that too. In early days of our project, we had to cancel the first deal because we could not agree on the "rights". Then we had to find another artist who knew the grips of the industry. With this a small company, we communicate frequently via visual exchange, reviews, discussions/blog etc. So far so good.

But I hope our friend has got enough information to chew on or will be able to find an affordable service to achieve his goals - good luck.

Thanks guys, most helpful. As it's a fairly small project I'm thinking of dragging in some mates to do this in their spare time..

Good to hear your experiences...food for thought.
