Went to a presentation yesterday about this:

www.machinima.com

Its basicly , people using game engines to make short movies in realtime. One of the presenters even made a music video thats being shown on MTV at the moment using quake 2 engine.

What do you guys think about this?

I've just never understood the whole Machinima thing. I do understand that some people want to tell stories and may not want to learn the animation tools necessary to do full character animation, but since most of the Machinima films I've seen are much like that video (Quake characters running around and shooting each other pointlessly), I just don't know what to think of it.

The film on their most popular downloads page, Anachronax, seems to be interesting though. I only watched the first few minutes, but it looks like it has a story and a real effort was put into making it look nice.

yeah yesterday they showed a 20 minute clip from the anachronox movie. The full movie is over two hours long which is impressive.

Currently i think the best use of this medium lies in comedy , if you watch the lumberjack movies at the site , they are quite hilarious :)

also it'll be fun to make previz with game engines , since it renders realtime.

Well, Steven Spielberg used (or so I heard) Unreal for planning shots etc on AI... It's just a matter of time :)

I've always thought the idea of "Engine Art" is great.. but so far the execution has left me wondering
