View Full Version : 3d Camaro Composition
Error404 03-14-2003, 06:55 PM Stepping into new territory for me, I have never done any 3d composition into real pictures before, so here goes!
http://www.danielbuck.net/wip/CamaroComp4.jpg
The reflections on the car are from a HDRI map I made of the parking lot (yea, I finaly got my 12inch chrome ball!!).
Someone has already commented on the angle of the car, so I'll explain it. The picture of the background was taken from my 2nd floor appartment, at full 200mm telephoto zoom. Kind of has a "peeping tom" look to it I guess.
I DID take a picture with the real car in the same (close to) position to get the positioning right, so the scale and angle aspect is pretty spot on.
Any of you guys out there who have done composition before, throw me some tips!!
Do yall usualy put a bit of noise and/or blur on the entire image when you finish?

that looks great, something about the area at the wheel line looked a bit unreal, I think because the pic looks like such a bright day with most of the other objects receiving alot of bounced light to light up the (usually) darker side.

other than that 99.9% real
had another look, thats mint, great work

I didn't even think of bouncing light off of the ground onto the car... great thinking!!
I'll probably have time to get to that this Sunday, Thanks again!! :buttrock:
i agree w/the last post - the wheels need some lightening up - and also, there's a weird reflection being cast on the hood - i'm sure this is from the HDRI, but because of the way the picture is cropped, we can't see where the reflection is coming from.
i don't have much experience with comps, but this is one of the best i've seen...

The HDRI was taken from the spot where the car is, so the reflections SOULD be close... but ya never know
I'll post an uncropped version to show more background when I get home.
The wheels need work, then need to have a more aluminum brushed metal look, rather than chrome. I'll work on that when I get the chance.
Thanks for the reply!

when I get too heavy reflection, I sometime use a precision blur in the image editor, to subtly blur a tad to take down the hard reflection, just to soften the reflection so its not standing out too much.

awesome!! It looks pretty real except the car looks almost too clean. And you have to do a red one!! If you remember from your last camaro topic I have an IROC-Z also, but its red. And I'm finally getting it painted, red with two black heritage stripes, YAY!!!

hehe! Yes, I remember you said you got a red Iroc :D :buttrock:
I'll have to dirty up the paint a bit as well :)
Thanks for the reply!

Having trouble with the black paint, so I'm doing other colors to get my self used to compositing. White seems to work quite good, I am working on a red one as well :buttrock:

Fixed the wheels to a more realistic look, and did some body tweeks. Oh, and I also changed the angle slightly, dont' know if it's noticable, but I did.
I'm getting there I think!!
A small jpg version of the normal illumination of the HDRI I made for this shot, for those of you interested:

Pretty cool.....
Just a very little details:
- flatten the tyres a bit in the place they touch the ground...
- the rims need a bit more reflections now ;)
- durtying the tyres a bit won't harm, take a look at this car in background ;)
Waiting for the red one:thumbsup:

Good Idea for putting a slight bulge on the tires, I'll do that!!
I do have to do something more to the tires/wheels
Thanks!
No update other than the color of the car this time, for those of you who wanted to see the red version.

I'm still here  just got lots of things I'm working on... unfortunatly, very few of them are in Max... I have moved to a new appartment, slowly getting furniture, looking for a job, and doing lots of work on my real car (86 camaro), I almost forgot about this thread, so here is another attempt at compositing:

any way, hope no one minds me resurecting this old post

How exactly do you create that enviroment ? Is it just a vertical plane with a picture on it or is it more complex.
I've been trying this too, but with only a vertical plane with the object in front of it, it looks extremely unrealistic. Your one looks good ! :)

Looking to be a nice lighting and shadow match, though the more I look at the last pic I can't escape the feeling that the car is very small, like a foot long or such. Think it's the angle of the shot and the size of the plants behind it, can't put my finger on it. Car itself is also maybe a little too blue-ish, if it's still the white version.
The windows are seeming ethereal, are those fully constructed or hollow? I think another giveaway on them is that cars rarely have tinted windows all the way around, and definitely not the windshield. Also agree the car or tyres could do with some dirt or imperfections.
Anyway new thread to me, good stuff, just saw the bump and thought I'd throw in my .02. Or .25. :)
