Hi, here is a test that I'm doing for a future short about rally.

I've modeled the Renault 5 turbo last year and decided to use it for a short. I use Combustion for compositing, I'm a rookie in that field of compositing so any comment are very welcome.

This is a still image with different layer to simulate 3d. I will add dust and dynamic vegetation with wind later.

Here the movie: http://www.jeansimard.com/media/r5t02.mov

Hi Spline01. There were 2 things that jumped out when I watched this: 1) You need more reflection of the vegetation, etc. on the windows of the car, and 2) It seems like the car is going too slow to get that much slide ... even on gravel. Or maybe the turn needs to start earlier and with a little more outside lean. Overall, it looks great, though. Other than the turn, the motion looks very realistic.

Hey there, it's a great start. I think the camera move in the beginning could use some work. It would be nice if it was a quicker "oh man" here he comes. Right now it feels very random and not real, less movement until the second he comes over the hill and then we're on it.

You need dust and rocks flying up, shooting some practicals for that will really sell the realism.

I think that turn would be one continuous movement as well. Right now he slides to our left, stops, turns with a jolt and then speeds off, It would definitely be one fluid turn/slide around the corner.

Hey Spline01,
I agree 100% with what the others said about starting the turn earlier. Also, the driver would be coming down as far to screen left as he can before he turns in toward the apex of the corner. He'd probably also not turn toward the outside of the corner before turning in, too. You can actually have the car follow the tire tracks already there to get a good idea of the line he'd take through the corner. When coming out of the corner, the car seems to snap back into a straight line too abruptly. Also, when it does come out of the slide, the front tires would probably line up to meet the back tires. Finally, when driving off, it doesn't seem like the car is accelerating--that driver would be full-throtle on roads that straight until the corner at the end.

I don't know if you're intending the jump to be realistic or not, but it also seems to either jump too high, or come down too quick. It comes down with a bang, too. The launch seems to be just a bit too steep. Check out videos of rally cars jumping, they typically land on all fours pretty well. You have the back coming down first. If it did that, I would expect the front to rebound more than the rear, since it hits harder. However, you have the rear bouncing more than the front.

Rally cars also bounce quite a bit, when the car is coming down the straight toward us, I would expect to see it kind of dip once or twice. It wouldn't bounce sinusoidially (like a spring) because of the dampers in those cars, but they do allow quite a bit of movement.

Good Luck,
Chris
