View Full Version : Cloth simulation and dynamics question in XL 8
lildragon 03-14-2003, 02:51 PM As I wait patiently for my copy of XL 8 to arrive I have a few questions :) most of you most likely have seen this bada$$ from the Middle Earth Challenge, and my question to you is how well is XL 8's cloth simulations and spring like dynamics? Reason is I'll be animatind the loin cloth you see there and the armor plates. The loin cloth is self-explanatory with how the animation would go, but what about an expression that can make those armor plates bounce ever so slightly when he moves, how tough is that going to be you think?
Let me know, been really impressed with XL 8 thus far

Hi,
I wouldn't use Dynamics for this but Soft IK. Put bones into the loin cloth and animate the Soft IK Goals according to the characters movements.
Dynamics might very well work, but the effect would be too soft for that kind of stiff cloth.

I don't have Dynamics, but from what I've seen and read it's not accurate enough to do clothing. That's the bad news, but the good news is that you could use softIK to do the armor plate and maybe the loin cloth--and it would be much easier and faster than using Dynamics.

Look at these sample movs Tito, look at the skirt made by Janine in particular: http://www.imashination.com/movies.html

Janine's example is cool, but it occurs to me that it may be impossible to prevent the skirt/loin cloth from colliding with the body using SoftIK--particularly since rotational limits don't play too well wiith it. Maybe that's why Janine's example uses a disembodied skirt?

I wonder if it would be possible to use the new TP collision node in conjunction with SIK?

YEah general feeling of Dynamics right now is that its not ideal for clothe simulatins :9
I agree for your purposes (I remember the test animations a while back) SIK with the bone dynamics might be pretty good, another person to talk to is MDME SADIE, he might be able to help you with making your own sort of Softbocy clothng using Thinking Particles.

yes adam, you can use tp in conjunction, just use a version of the tp softbody example that i made on my site, or instead of that use a patricles to drive the goals for the bones... maybe i should try to make some example scenes of how tp softbodies can be used with mocca.
