Title: Katsumi
Name: Bao Pham
Country: USA
Software: Painter, Photoshop

A commissioned piece for Dane O. Katsumi is described as a young widow wondering the far west seeking revenge for her husband's death. To avoid the complications of a western scene, I opted for a simpler, and maybe more ambiguous, but I think it works well for her.
Done with photoshop and a bit of painter.
Thanks for looking :}

Great work, gorgeous palette and the simple setting works perfectly. I love how the viewer appears to have taken her almost by surprise, and the amount of character you have given her, definitely *not* usual-fare katana-wielding heroine.

Very nice Bao - beautiful piece :)

Her eyes seems a bit off or looking in slightly different directions (maybe flip it to double check?)

Exotic 3 for sure! ;)
Simply great !
Well composed, impressive (stunning) colors, depth of field well balanced, her expression is powerful and translates well the concept guideline. Oh my... you are a great professional.

Questions:
Did you use any reference for this piece?
How did you choose the final composition and pose? Intuitive process or academic approach?

5 stars!

Cheers,

bao

Wow! Thanks very everyone! and thank you Rebecca for the plug:D
MoonVisionStudio (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=105758) Thanks for "nominating" me?:} This one actually got in Expose 5 Whoo!
swordfish-II (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=278068) I really wanted the scene to contrast with what's she's feeling. It's more interesting to me
Thaldir (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=229501) Thank you! That was the intention
Natascha Thanks! I'll check, but she is still staring at me when I move from side to side, that's a good sign to me
hasansgrafix (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=275602) thank you very much!:]
Kickflipkid687 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=141723) her ears do stick out a bit. I notice that earlier on and decided to keep it to add some character
LATROMMI-SUINEG (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=121673) Shhhh, she's japanese. Heh, I'm Vietnamese, so some of that must've rubbed off;)
Djampa (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=69217) Thank you! I used a lot of references for her. In fact, the commissioner sent me a lot to begin with, then I checked out some books from the library, and also watched "Memoirs of a Geisha" just to get as much information as I could to start painting. The same process for the field, but most of the refs were from googled images
I had to sketch of her before thinking about the composition, so I arrived at the off center compo pretty easily. From there on, I just try to balance it out. Notice how the grass on the right rises a bit higher than the rest, and how everything sort of lift up toward the top right.

Thanks again everyone! I glad you guys enjoy it, because I had a fun time painting it
almost forgot, here's a little close-up

The girl is beautiful, and I loved the choice of background--I used to live in Idaho and I knew right away she was somewhere like the American West (though there may be similar wheatfields in Northern China). Perfect in all ways!

A pleasure!!

I love her steely expression. There is a great deal of subtlety in her face and body language.
The simplicity of the scene works nicely as well.

This is an awesome pic.
