Title: Angel's Egg
Name: Marta Dahlig
Country: Poland
Software: Painter, Photoshop
Well, here's my latest. This stylization is something completely new to me, so please be kind ;) The main inspiration credits go to the movie of the same title, Angel's Egg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel's_Egg), directed by Mamoru Oshii. It is a greatly inspiring picture and I have been planning to paint a tribute to it for years. I highly recommend it. :)
Anyway, this painting was made for the first part (of three) of the Custom Brush Guide, commissioned by ImagineFX and you will be able to find it in Issue 19, which is to be released next month. The tutorial covers useful brushes which I paint characters with (the Photoshop brush files will be included on the DVD).
technical:
Painting mainly in Photoshop with some aid from PainterX. I intended kept the background looser on purpose, so don't mind the smudginess please.
I used a ton of photo references from Google for this piece (including celebrities, models ack!), some live studies and three photo brushes (for the egg texture, background textures and for the dirt in the background). I've lost some, but click here (http://www.marta-dahlig.com/AErefs.jpg) to see the pics! :)
And here's some closeups:

Hello Marta!
Very unusual from you, to see you painting destroyed wasted cities with helpless girls all of a sudden - but I must say that I really like it.
She has such wonderful expression in her face. It is really meaningful. And I so totally dig that foliage.
You have become very experimental recently and that shows that you can do much more than different women in dresses :)
However, may I be allowed to nitpic a bit? I think that the lower part of the egg should be darker, right now it seems a little flat and that's irritating because it plays a supporting role in that painting. Her nose seems to be a bit off, too. If you don't want to go with an overdetailed background - how about bluring it a bit? ;)

Ohhh...Fantastic work as always Marta.
Her body & skin tones are so greatly realistic. I´m really curious about the movie...definitely i´ll check it out. The background is amazing too...Great atmosphere.:applause:
There´s just one thing i want to point...i think the right eye need the same marks made on the left side, but only lower the eyelashes. It´s a tiny detail...anyway i´m totally impressed by this painting.
Cheers:beer:

Love postapocalyptic theme with such a romantic character and this weeds inside the egg what giving a hope to start over from ground zero.

Czesc, Marta.Beautiful! 5 Stars. I remember seeing the the Aggel's egg way back in the 80's at a comic book convention (back then you had to read the translations to a anime in a typed out booklet!) What a fantastic tribute!

Hey,
Great picture. I love Oshii's film, one of my favourites. It's funny how I could recognize where those eyes came from at first sight :)
Good job!

Stunning as always! My only problem with it is that I can no longer avoid the fact that I'm going to have to lock myself away in a room for a month and paint until I can produce skin tones like that
Beautiful, inspiring and too bloody good

And you did again :)
You're my idol, Marta. I always feel impressed with every new piece from you. Although this one is a bit different from previous ones. It's more loose as you said, and this is a bit uncommon to see in a Marta's painting... But is great, you're my favorite artist nowadays.
Five stars, girl.
Take care!

Excellently done. It's great to see something "different" from what you usually paint, and yet one can see it's your own style
You have rendered the skintones so well, it is a joy to look at those hands. Also her face is lovely. To me, her beautiful look with the lace makes an interesting contrast to the destroyed, after-war-like surroundings.

Wonderful piece! Your command of the figure is inspiring. Just the right amount of detail vs. inpression1 I have to agree with bsnt though. I don't feel that the egg is sitting properly in the image. Maybe some more shadow to punch up the sense of depth. I think it stands out as much as it does because the figure is so beautiflly painted.

Thank you so much for the comments everone, it's very appreciated.
I knew there was something wrong about the egg ;P The project was a very prompt one and I had no time to dwell on every little bit, but I do promise I will try to fix the mentioned bugs. Thank you once again!

The ambiance is wonderful, at once hopeful and desolate. Everyone mentioned the nitpicks, so I won't. Can't wait to pick up the mag with your brushes!

The girl looks a bit too photo based ....
The egg doesn't have the right egg shape and as somebody else already mentioned it should perhaps have some shadow on the bottom part.
The whole composition isn't very lucky .... Why did you choose to cut the top of her head and why is the figure right in the middle of the picture. Sorry it doesn't do it for me ....

I think this piece looks much better in the magazine. You can see all the details better, and I think it's because of my mac monitor settings and setup. Her eyes in the magazine are so gorgeous - with all the black hair around which contrasts the eye, and lip color that helps compliment the eye. I bought the whole $15 ImagineFX mag just to get this one picture. I would almost call it a masterpiece and it's definitely one of the prettiest girls I've encountered so far.
'BlacKeri', ooh I remember you were in the Master-Servant competition. That's neat to find out. I remember I kept a eye on your thread.
