No and No and Who knows? There is however a Photoshop clone called Gimp that is REALLY nice and comparable to Photoshop in many ways. Blender would prob be an alternative to Max although there is a linux ver. of Maya (not that I recommend Maya :surprised ). I dont think we'll see a full blown version of Max on Linux but a render slave might be possible but highly doubtfull due to all the plugins out there that would also need to be compiled for Linux to work with it.

To answer your question, yes it is possible to run Photoshop and 3dsmax under Linux with VMware. http://www.vmware.com/products/desktop/ws_features.html
Native Linux versions of either application however, are not available. At one time there was Irix and I believe Solaris versions of Photoshop that bombed and it's unlikely Adobe will take the risk again on such a relatively small Linux artist market share. :( From what I understand, 3dsmax has a ton of legacy that would require almost a complete rewrite to port to Linux.
MFreywald: Blender over Maya?

Well, Blender is relatively harmless as far as competing with Max, whereas Maya is definatly a strong competitor :p
You can use wine WineHQ (http://www.winehq.com). It's free to use!
And have a look here:
http://frankscorner.org/ (on hold at the moment).
There are HowTo's how to use e.g. Photoshop 5.5 with wine.
Hope this helps...

Currently MAX is very tightly integrated into the Windows API, hence it's only available on that platform. The reason for this is that when development began in 1993 (when NT was released) it required a substantial amount of optimization to get useable performance on a PC. Now remember, this is when OpenGL cards for PCs were extremely rare and cost in the $$thousands. That's why they developed HEIDI btw.
So to port MAX to another platform is just not possible without a rewrite of the core API. However I suspect that's already in the works and portable code will likely be a top priority.
Still from my old LW experience, multi-platform 3d systems can be a pain to support. For example, at Computer Cafe we had LW on Alpha and on Intel. Some plugins were available only on Intel and some just acted different on Alpha. So it's a mixed blessing.

wine can be a difficult customer to try and set up. theres about 3 versions of it.
codeweavers being the best all rounder.
wine is still in early beta stage so dont expect much.
we never had much joy with max but lw did work. although you have to try different methods.
also it works better with different kernels too.
when i was using debian 3.0 i had the best results. although i have never tried vmware.
