 Greetings all,

Iggy here making introductions. I'm an engineer and budding animator in Atlanta. I've been animating Solidworks files with IPA by Immersive Design, but it's a poor substitute for real animation software. Still, I've done some cool videos with the help of Premiere. I do industrial animation for our products and services. You can see one at:

Lately I've been trying out Cinema 4D and 3ds max. Cinema seems like the better one, mainly for the interface and the modules. I'm coming up to speed, so I'll be asking lots of questions! I'm sure it's been covered frequently before (I'm still working my way through the older posts here), but any comments comparing the two packages are welcomed...

Is anyone else out there using C4D for industrial animation? Anyone using Solidworks files? Right now I've been converting them to .3ds files and that seems to work well. I still don't really understand the difference between parametric (Solidworks), polygons, and NURBS.

I have to say that I'm a little irked that Maxon took the manuals offline. I've been working through the tutorials, but I have a lot of questions and things that I'd like to try, but a lot of the interface is still Greek to me. The tutorial just doesn't have the answers... 3ds max has searchable online help which lets me test a lot of ideas. I'll probably be getting a real copy pretty shortly, but damn.

Uh, I've probably said too much already...but in case I haven't, let me ask a question that's been puzzling me. When I import parts I usually have to move the pivot points. Is there a way to get a pivot point to be centered on a circular face? I can get pretty close (probably close enough) by hand, but the engineer in me keeps digging for more. And any recommendations for good tutorial sites are appreciated.

Sorry for my long-windedness. I'm pretty excited about getting paid to learn this software! Lots to learn...

Thanks,
Iggy

Whoa, I had completely overlooked the tutorial thread. :insane: There's some amazing stuff in there. Thanks for the links.
