Hi I want to know what kind of material realistically describes insect exoskeleton? like say the shells of a crab or the carapace of insects.etc

I am getting a feeling that there is SSS or even glass volumetrics...

i am trying to get results for a strong transluscence insect here in austria too, but it seems this is really a problem in maya - mentalray.
we've tried to get a good result with misss physical, partivolume, lglass& dielectric shader combined with mix20 layer and misss shaders, several other tests, massive networks, massive light rigs, massive textures and displacements from z-brush and many many renderlayers, but after 2 month of testing we didn't got any useful results..

i think it is more easy to render such things with vray (because there are many shaders out there to download).
maxwellrender too..

i would appreciate tips from pro's too.
