I've had this problem for a while so I figured I would consult the experts. I am trying to render an early version of an indoor scene with a jack o lantern and relying on a single light inside the jack o lantern and global illumination for lighting. It seems mental ray is not liking my jack o lantern concave model and is making it glow full bright. It is also doing this with other concave objects i place in the scene to test, as well as messing with the placeholder table I set up underneath it. There should be a shadow cast by the jack o lantern on the table placeholder, but instead it is just extremely bright light. When I render the scene without the jack o lantern the GI works fine. When I dim the light inside the pumpkin enough for it to be a more brightness, it no longer has enough light for the GI to light up the room.

Has anyone here ran into this problem or have any clue to how to solve this? Thanks a ton.

Does your lantern have thickness, i.e internal faces, or is it single polygon thick walls? If so try putting a shell modifier on it and do a test, see if that helps.

Alternatively you could post your scene so we can have a rummage!

This happens because the photon sampling radius is too big, you have to limit it but you'll also get some noise, so you'll have to increase the photons per sample and tweak the other setting, this light leak is well known and is covered in 3dsmax9 tutorials.

Have you tried not using GI and use only final gather?

Hey, thanks man. Changing the sampling radius and photons per sample really didnt work but the final gather only did. When I finally got the thing to stop glowing just trying the sampling thing it would gimmie lots of noise. Then when I would boost the photons it would glow again. But final gather only works like a charm. Thanks again.
