View Full Version : Chain link fence...how?

anybody have any ideas on making a decent looking chain link fence and tennis court net?

The only idea I have right now is a plane with a texture on it with transparent holes in the texture. I would prefer something that would actually look like a net or fence and not just a flat plane.

*edit*

Also, I am assuming that modeling every part of the fence would take a long time and pretty much kill my machine just working with the scene and trying to render it.

Thanx

Modeling the fence wouldn't be hard, it would just be very tedious and probably not necessary unless you're going for a close up shot.

Texture a plane would probably be your best bet, for both. To get a 3d look, play around with the bump map and displacement map.

good luck

Depending on the shot. If you get anything less than say 75 degrees from straight on to the fence, model it. I've had to do a modelled chain link before, and it was surprizingly really fast. I made one "zigzag" Link vertically, and duplicated it along the row. It did slow down the scene a bit in perspective, but I just put it on its own layer and it was easy breezy.

Hope this helps.

Thanx for the input. Looks like I have some experimenting to do. But, I think that I will probably have to model but we will see what texturing and bump maps will yield
