View Full Version : Vehicle: "Concept" car
Viper.dk 03-13-2003, 11:53 PM This is something I'm working on, trying to learn to model (never done that before), so it's taking its time, but I'm learning a lot of good stuff.
I'm using MAX R5 and poly modeling for building it. Then using Brazil for the rendering.

http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/body_65.jpg
http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/body_68.jpg
The seats are just dummies, to get something into the cabine.
I of course still need to do the lights, which scares me a bit. Then the rest of the interior and small fixes and stuff.
The "design" is my own - just building as I go along, getting ideas from other cars, to have something to compare my modeling to.
Comments and epsecially ways to improve it are of course very welcome :)
Thanks in advance.

The surface is looking much better now.. Now get some more detail on it, still looking too plain :)

Soeren is right, you need to get some detail! The body is too smooth :)
Viper.dk

Yeah, guys - I know about the detail. Gotta add some stuff here and there - like build seams, or what you would call them.
Don't know if I'll add them on this car, but time will tell (or perhaps I will).
Anyway, thanks for the comments ;)
Doing some cleaning of the mesh right now. There's a few errors here and there (imagine that, being my first (actually semi-second) model ever). Some are fixable, some I just f***ed up real good in the beginning. They're not too bad though.

great mesh man, but i think you should work on those headlights

Since I'm not very into cars, I can't really get down to details..
But I really like the look of it.

It looks like a hybrid of 2 or more cars...
One of them definetly is Dodge Viper - not from the side but from front and back
Really nice!

Here's a few flat material no-skylight renders:

Did some cleaning up of the mesh o_O
Steam: It has some similarities to the Viper GTS, but that's mostly the roof.
I've not combined any cars, I just got inspired by different cars.
For instance: The roof is from the Viper GTS.
The exhaust is from the Mercedes SL500.
The front is somewhat Viper/Mazda MX-5 (Miata).
I just got a lot of ideas from current cars, to have some base in what I modeled :)
Syrogen: Yeah, know about the lights. But they scare me ;)

Great Stuff!

:applause: Awesome stuff !! :applause:
You clearly have a great understanding of poportions
A suggestion might be that you make the arches a bit sharper and noticeable. And not quite as smooth.
Anyways this is going to be great once finished Good Job !

What do you think about adding the vent style things that ferarris have?
Viper.dk
03-28-2003, 11:06 AM
Morbid Angel: I'm using the Uffizi HDRI map for reflection and using a plain color skylight for illumination. Should use the HDRI map, but using the plain color saves some rendertime. Probably gonna change it to the HDRI map later.
nalhcal: The Testarossa styled air intake in the doors?

Here's a far better close up. Better material. Both on the brakes and the rims.

Finally started adding lights to the car. Although they scare me, I think it's going somewhat ok.
I'll probably end up remaking them a few million times and what not, but here's how they look at the moment.

Suggestions on how to improve them is more than welcome! :wavey:

hi again Viper.dk
can you explain me one thing??
so..
you sad..
"I'm using the Uffizi HDRI map for reflection and using a plain color skylight for illumination. Should use the HDRI map, but using the plain color saves some rendertime. Probably gonna change it to the HDRI map later.
so.. iīve been try to do that.. but the car becames very very reflective..
look what i did..
i put the hdri map at the " reflection" guide of the car body material and with spherical environment.
set the sky to white color.
since im using max5īs light tracer.. i put bouces=2
but when rendering.. the car apear with clouds for every side of it!
seems that its painted with clouds!
can you give me a hint?
thanksssssssss

BluesManJF: Do you have a thread with your progress? That could be really helpful, since you could post pictures of your problems in there - and get a lot more help ;)
Anyway - it sounds to me that you're missing a ground plane of some sort? And if it's too reflective, turn down the output strenght of the HDRI map - or your car shader, if it's too high on that.

hi again.. and thanks for you patience..
so..
im in job now.. and i dont have the pictures with the problem that i sad.. but i have one picture(wich is not with hdri map) that can give you some idea of what im trying to explain
http://www.artnet.com.br/~cledson/etc/esc01.jpg
so.. look at the side.. see that green reflection?
so.. when i was using the hdr images at the body, the car was entire cover of clouds(cose in that case i used a hdri map of clouds)
somebody told me to put a white objet over the car to give the some reflection...
ill put some images with the problem to you.. but i dont thave these now... ill put it in a few days..
thanks a lot

Here's a shot of some new light chambers for the tail lights. This will probably be the design of them. Now I just need to do the inner workings of them.
http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/tail_lights_14.jpg
I know there's a few mesh errors, where the reflection gets weird and such. I'll get those cleaned up soon.
BluesManJF: Seems to me that your ground plane is way to small. That might be the problem. You should make it huge as hell.

hey viper..
you model is great
so..
look how is my one now..
http://www.artnet.com.br/~cledson/etc/escb.jpg
but it continues so reflexive!
i put a falloff map in the reflection guide from black to white.. and in the white color i put a raytrace map..
can you give me some tip about that?
thanks a LOT!

Here's an update of the tail lights. They're done, now they just need to get tweaked, so they look real.
There is glass in front of them, it's just a bit too transparent, but I gotta fix that.
http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/tail_lights_18.jpg
Tips, comments and/or suggestions anyone? =)
BluesManJF: You need a ground plane and then you need to tweak the settings of your material and HDRI map. I can't help you with the settings of the material, I use Brazil and not standard MAX.

Here's a 360 render with the tail lights - and another shot of the tail lights - just for fun.
360 animation:
QuickTime (2 MB) (http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/360_02.mov)
DivX (1.2 MB) (http://www.viper.dk/stuff/images/3D/Unspecified_car/modeling/360_02.avi)

And a few shots of it in red. Just because I felt like it.

damn, looking great! Excellent design, and very well modeled. It's coming together nicely, the taillight especially have improved a ton. Keep going!
Just out of curiousity though, what did you use for a reflection map? It looks like an HDRI to me, but can you be specific on what HDRI you used and how you used it? It would help me out a lot. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments :bounce:
I'm still not quite happy with the tail lights, but I'll work on them every now and then and try and get some reference material, to check how they look a bit more close-up.
The HDRI map is Uffizi. It's mapped to a sphere I can then adjust. The environment is not final. I'll tweak that to hell and back, when the car's done. But for now it works ok.
I've also noticed that the rear is really flat. That's not looking all that good. Gonna give it some tweakage later :)
