I am trying to render an occlusion pass in AE as a png sequence with transparency so that the white in the pass comes out transparent while the black is visible - anyone know how to do this?

Multiply the AO layer. If that doesn't work try using a duplicate as a (inverted) luma matte.

Works a treat. I put a black solid in the layer below and convert it to an inverted Luma Matte.
