hi

i am trying to animate to 2 objects (lets say circles) kiss.
- i need to have the 2 objects meet; fine
- then press against each other with some squash; fine
- then stick to each other (just the point at which the joined) as they push apart
- then "jiggle" a little as they seperate

the last 2 bits are the ones i am having issues with.
the circle object (its a heart shape actually) is a mask on a solid, so in order to get the "sticking" i cannot use the bezier handles i need some sort or FFD box (ala max/maya) to use on just a bit of the object. Is there such a thing in after effexts?

and for the "jiggle" i need again some sort of ffd box to region select a part of the object and a "jiggle / soft body" type operator again is there such a solution in aftereffects?

many thanks for any help that you may offer

tak.

Hehe, interesting project. You won't find the dynamics and point controls you are used to from the 3D world in AE. It's more about illusion and fakery :). I would probably approach this with the liquify filter which allows you to "push" and "squish" parts of a layer into a different shape. Then keyframe the strength of this distortion. It'll be a bit tricky.

Alternatively I think for more control it's masks with keyframed shapes. Tedious and all hand animated.

As far as an expression or soft-body emulation goes, I'm at a loss - there are expressions that do some real basic stuff but not like this that I've seen.

The best substitude for a ffd box in AE is a mesh warp which you can find in distortion filters menu. To get the jiggle I can't see any other way than manually keyframing the mesh warp which should be fine anyway. Five little jiggle moves into each direction should do the job, that takes may be 10 minutes of your time.
Not sure if masks with a mesh warp on the top is make AE freak out, may be you have to precomp the mask layers or even prerender them.
