Only way I've found is to turn on backface culling from the polygon options in preferences

Like that? That's the way my settings are now :(
Hmm try and set it this way:
select your poly object, and then goto Display - > Custom Polygon Display options.
Set Backface culling to ON in the combo box and hit apply ;)

You can also use the paint selection tool
