I am really considering migrating to Linux on my home machine, it would make sense of the current moves at work. I have looked around and have found a Linux release called Debian.

www.debian.org

and it looks as though it meets all my requirements, but when i checked the alias|wavefront hardware qualifications list here:

http://www.aliaswavefront.com/en/Community/Support/qualified_hardware/QUAL/maya_45_linux.html

It reports that it only runs on Red Hat (v7.2-3). Now does anyone have any experience running Maya on a Linux system based on Debian or any other non-RH varient?
What are the results? Does it work? Did you have to massage any part of the OS to get it installed? What did you do?

Do you have any thoughts about Maya on Linux?

I am completely open to hearing thoughts, feedabck and insights.

I wouldn't bother even trying to run Maya on a different distribution.

It's very touchy about versions of installed libraries, etc., and since the Red Hat distributions are just as inexpensive as Debian's, why bother?

Thanks Mark, but i think we might have some crossed wires here!

Debian is distributed freely ( i have already downloaded the ISO files), while RH weighs in at about $149 for a similar function set (according the RH online store) so there is a difference, at least to my limited knowledge of RH. Is there a freely distributed version of RH available???

But i don't want to be a cheap skate either! Just that i have viewed through the RH site and the Debian site and really like the later very much.

I have no production experience of Maya outside of IRIX and little NT experience to my credit, so i can see the wisdom in the advice you gave! Do you currently run Maya on a Linux license? Have you ever?

Thanks again for the response.

uh, Mark...

... i feel silly...

just read through the Red Hat site a touch more carefully....

Sorry about that. Guess the wires were crossed. Thanks for the advice, you answered my question.

Now, do you have any experience running on Linux? I'd love to hear what that experience was.

I am running Maya 4 under the SuSE 8 distribution. It works without flaws.
Also, I do not see a reason as to why it shouldn't work under any other LSB compliant distribution, so you could probably pick any fairly recent distribution which offers OpenGL and RPM package management.

You've been lucky.

In my experience, Maya is sensitive to versions of glibc, versions of the kernel, versions of drivers, versions of Xfree86, etc. etc.

The qualified versions of Red Hat have these things pretty much locked down to the extent that Maya's OK. There's no doubt you could get just about any Linux distribution running if you're willing to go hunting for the right version of each library, but I can't really see the benefit.

Does anyone know relatively how much more reliable running Maya on Redhat 7.3 as opposed to 8 is? I'm running 8 now and have also been thinking of purchasing Maya for Linux. Should I take the trouble to downgrade?

Thanks,
Sean.
