mtmckinley 03-13-2003, 09:51 PM The Heroic Robot!
Just one problem... he has to stay plugged in! LOL
This is just a quickie sketch... gonna play with the robot's look some. :)
Lots of contracting work going on, so don't know if I'll be able to work on this guy too much, but we'll see how it goes. :D

Wow - nice sketch and great idea!
It would be great if he eventually got a sidekick Generator Boy, who scares easily and often wanders off...

lol, great concept :D
You could make a render where he looks all sad while hes being abused as a fridge/coffe machine/light by people living there :) Or show him struggling while kids are holding batteries a few feet away from his wire reach :p

Your generator boy looks alot like the robots from disney's movie "The Black Hole" remember it ? late 70's early 80's they had great character and so does your concept :applause:
mtmckinley
03-13-2003, 11:34 PM
Now that you mention it, I do remember Black Hole... don't recall the actual movie, though.... Hmmm... too long ago... I was thinking he looked like the little guy from the HeMan cartoons. :)
Thanks! :D
EDIT:
Ah, here's a pic I found. It does look pretty similar, eh?

03-14-2003, 07:33 AM
Dude, I love this idea! I agree with the person who recommended keeping the legs on the main hero.
This reminds me a bit of the anime Evangelion. You have these kick-ass monstrous robots who have to fight plugged in with these huge power plugs. There are some early episodes where the plug comes out or gets severed and they have only a a minute or so of backup power before they shut down. It was both bold and brilliant to put in such a flaw in those mecha designs and they pull it off quite nicely.
Like what I'm seeing so far. Keep it up!
mtmckinley
03-14-2003, 09:11 AM
Gremlin - Thanks! :)
D'oh! Boy - Thanks! Afraid I've not seen Evangelion... anime isn't exactly something I'm really able to get my hands on where I am.
I thought I'd do a little backstory thing...
A mad scientist decides to creates a super-robot that he wants to use to take over the world! However, after building a prototype, a REAL super hero manages to defeat him. The hero activates the prototype robot and manages to convince the highly advanced synthetic being to use his powers for good!
But, he's a prototype, and was never meant to really do much outside the lab! He has no internal energy source, and is REQUIRED to be plugged in at all times in order to function! Wanting desperately to make his super hero rescuer proud, he grabs one of the mad scientist's extra nuclear reactors, slaps a AI brain in it and wheels and dubs it "Generator Boy!" He has the the little robot plug him in and with this new portable power source, POWER PLUG is born!
But... Power Plug wasn't all that good at programming, and Generator Boy's AI causes him to immediately flee from all danger, forcing the hero to follow or face shut down!

Another month and another nice creation in the works for you Mtmckinley, nice to see. I like the concept very much, shows lot's of potential.
However in my opinion Generator Boy should keep the arms. But that's just one of those taste things.I just think that arms add sooo much to the overall appeal. And adds alot of diversity to the character in question. But taste aside you do have a very nice start, clean modeling as well.

Awesome. Nothing like a soft shader to do everyone else in. Color scheme looks good but...hmmm...nah it looks good...
What i was gonna say is that if hes supposed to be an all-purpose crime fighting robot, shouldnt he look a little less feminine? His only pitfall is the cord so maybe he should look really really cool and then just have a bright orange extension cord out the back of his head :P Whichever way you go, it still looks good with those colors. NJ mike

Awsome!
I dont like the colors though.
I think the metal robot look would do best for both.
A black and white render, like the front page of a newspaper, would rock! So maybee texture them on a gray scale.
G! That is a short cable ;) I love every bit of this one except for one thing,,, those feet look so flat, in the concpet they were smaller and a bit higher, tbh I liked that more.

TRyanD - I was just playing with the colors. ;) I'm thinking of having it be more black. I'm also thinking of going with a toonish shader as I've not played with toon shaders before.
Egyt - That's just a temporary cord. I'm planning on the final to be a bit longer with an extension cord lengthening it between them. :)
Legs are just the general shape really at the moment. :) You're right though, too flat. Thanks!

All I have to say is, "I smell winner." That, and don't use this commercially or Tim Burton will slap a lawsuit on you for infringement of Robot-Boy, a character from his online cartoon series, Stain-Boy .
P.S. - Is he going to have any accessories?

littlebrother - Seems strange that I keep getting accused of stealing the design of Generator Boy from all these movies and shows that I've never seen before... (not necessarily here in this thread, but through PMs and emails and even other forums... :p)
Anyway, I do plan on giving him retractable arms as well as a smaller, 3rd wheel.

I'm terrible with feet. :p Probably rework them again before I'm done. lol I think I'm going to start playing with toon shaders and see what kind of results I can get.

Man, I have been watching this thread since the beginning. I have to say this is one of the best Ideas so far. And such a great model. He looks like he and his sidekick would be a joy to animate. You should come up with some short animations to do with these guys...I think a ton of people would love to watch some episodes of POWER PLUG and Generator Boy.!!! I'm laughing just thinking of the theme song in my head. :) Great job. Keep it up..MORE MORE MORE

Dimitri - Thanks! I'll see about increasing the size of the boots.
Hmura - Thanks a lot! :D
Grayscale - Thanks! I definitely hope to do an animation with these guys eventually. :)

That looks great. :buttrock: It's a perfect for this challenge too.
Although I was hoping you were going to color his jaw a darker version of his face to give the impressive of a 5 o'clock shadow. Like a dark, dark blue in this case. Of course, the yellow/gold is almost obnoxious, which fits perfectly with my impression of his character.

Thanks, Kogepan! I did try a dark "stubble" blue for the chin, but it just didn't look all that good in my opinion. Must be because of the whole robot thing, makes it look unnatural.

Last render is really nice with that metallic look and your colors are great . It's giving them this toy - cartoon super hero look :bounce:
the evolution of this one has been really fun to watch, one of my faves. has all the modeling been done in maya?
great stuff

Dirk_P_Ho, Grub - Thanks!
baby - I wanted the plug to be visible and not hidden by the cape. I was going to put it higher up on his head, but the current position was suggested. :)
DimitrisLiatsos - Thanks, Dimitri! :) That was the plan!
fig - Thanks! Yes, it has all been done in Maya.
well I was thinking of a much lower plug  if U see what I mean...

what did u do to make him look like that in maya?

I'm using the combination of two Ramp Shaders.
First one has two color swatches and set to Facing Direction. First color swatch is black for the outline, while a second Ramp Shader is mapped to second swatch.
Second one has the color, and is set to Brightness.

Guess it is a little late for comments.
Plug in his butt and then mirror the plug on generator boy....
Hope you win! Great idea.
Can you use the spec highlight on his chin to make more of a stubble look? Or what about trying one with scratches?
Good luck.

I'm hoping I have enough time to rig and create a suitable environment, and maybe a small animation. :) We'll see how it goes!

Whew... finally got a few minutes. :p
http://www.cgchallenge.com/entries/4923/27_large.jpg
I'm playing with the idea of texturing the background normally and just letting the character be toon shaded... Guess I won't really know until I try it. :)
Here's the story as I see it playing out:
Power Plug comes bounding into the alley with Generator Boy rolling behind him, trying to keep up. Suddenly, PP stops and looks up into the sky!
A huge fiery meteor is heading straight toward earth!
With a determined look on his face, he points at the coming catastrophe and bids GB to follow. GB quickly refuses, shaking his head and shaking in fright!
PP grows impatient, stomping his foot and beckoning GB to "come."
GB promptly turns around and rolls away as fast as he can. PP shakes his head in disgust for a second before realizing that his power source tether is quickly becoming taut!
Hijinks ensue. ;) Hoping to animate this or something similar eventually.

I just find the legs to be a bit small compared to the arms.
I want to see this posed, come on!

Hi Mt..............
Well I like the overall concept/idea very much. And the modeling has been done quite well.
I know that you are going for that "Toon" look with a toon shader style. And while I think it does look very good I still cannot escape the feeling that it would still be more of a standout model if it was given a more rough beaten up worn rusted out type finish.
Also I think the boots should be given the same treatment the hands were given, more size or exxageration. Well just minor nit picks or thoughts on my behalf.
All in all I still think alot of fine work has been done with your two guys here. One of the best thus far.I still hope to see more.Keep at it,it's worth it.

Frinsklen - Well, I think the original had tiny legs, too... kinda for the humor, I think, but i've enlarged them a bit. Thanks!
Gremlin - Thanks! :)
Virtuoso - I'll see about dirtying him up before it's done. :) Thanks!

Cool stuff! Agree with Virtuoso. Love the back alley also. It looks like the alley I've planned for my animation challange. Must think up something else now... :hmm:
One thing though. Your script does not match the guidlines. It is not alowed to use scene cuts. :annoyed: Hope U can rewrite the script to fit the guideline. Your story is funny.

Great concept and execution of the ideas/concepts.
I just thought you might like some ideas I had when I looked at your alley and your ideas of doing an animation.
I think something like, you see someone, a villan I guess, come running into the scene from the street, and quickly looking around and climbing the ladder. And as soon as he leaves the scene, the robots come around the corner, and Power Plug runs in and stops suddenly as he has lost sight of the villan. As he stops suddenly Generator Boy crashes into the back of him causing a funny collision. (sorry even the thought of that scene cracks me up)
Then noticing the only way the villan could of gone is up the ladder, he jumps up and grabs the ladder and starts climbing up, and has Generator Boy has no legs, he gets knocked around on the ladder and all the poles around and so forth.
Just my ideas anyway. :D

I appreciate the replies. :)
I'm currently hard at work on a job evaluation, so don't know if I'm going to be able to get back to this project or not. Sucks, I know. :(
In anycase, look here as I might pull an all-nighter toward the end. lol ;)

And you only had limited time??

05-01-2003, 07:02 PM
swag - Thanks! Seems Generator Boy is definitely a favorite. :) I'm not sure I understand your question regarding what's on the ground. It's a texture of gravel/pavement created from a photo that I have taken. I wanted it to look like trash and such on the ground, hince the reflective parts... a tin can there, a bottle cap here. That sort of thing.
Starv-Thanks. :) Has it been moved? Well, I'm afraid I've got to get prepared for my moving date, so I don't know if I'll be able to do much more for this one.
rockrat - Thanks a lot! :D I'm afraid because of a few other projects, as well as a job evaluation I worked on for a few days, I haven't really touched this project all April until a couple days ago. I'm glad I got as much done as I did in the first few weeks of the challenge! :D

mtmckinley, glad to see you got the job. I have been frequenting your thread since the beginning of the challenge and I must say I enjoyed seeing all the changes and informative updates.
It was a pleasure watching your concept become virtual reality.

coCoKNIght- Thanks. :) I know the looks of the environment and the characters are contrasting, but I wanted to see what it looked like. Plus, I only had the one day left when I started texturing the environment and this was faster. :p lol

05-04-2003, 07:57 PM
sweet :) i love ppl who model in polys! :) how did you make those tubes? extrude all the face but not keeping the keep faces together option? or extruding row by row? and how did you make a tube with polies?
mtmckinley
05-04-2003, 09:43 PM
Well, (I'm using Maya, btw) I used the Surfaces > Extrude curve command (draw a path, draw a profile) which is normally used for NURBS, but I used its polygon output options. I extruded every other row of faces, yes. :)
