Title: Dining Out by Aristea Fotopoulou
Name: Aristea Fotopoulou
Country: Greece
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop

This is a simple scene, two window left and right with sunlight from the left. A standard omni around the right window to smooth it out. Done in Max 9 and rendered with Mental Ray, I then touched it up in Photoshop a bit, mostly exposure.

Even though call it Dining Out, it is an interior scene, a hot summer morning. Critique welcome.

Nice job!

I would agree with the above comment. Add either a bump map or a distort map to the wall.

Give some depth to it.

Also I think it would add alot of interest if you were to cast a shadow onto the back wall so it can capture some specular highlights and to show off the bump/distort you'll be putting on it.

Light is interesting! You're using it quite nicely right now by making it hit the chair.

You can add quite a bit to this by making the light more dynamic by angling it, while having it hit the back wall.

Good luck! :)

the advice, I will repost as soon as I work the bump and I 'll try changing the light direction too.
As for the little tree, it sure is interesting, I didn't model it though, it was provided (I did not model the chairs or table either, I composed the scene, lights and textures and rendering). All I did was texture it, I used a grass map for the leaves and a matte barke map for the hard part. Also, the sunlight hits it directly and this is why it looks realistic. I will post a small picture with the little tree further in the backround so that you see the diffrence. Also I will post a picture with a standard max tree, if you make it small, texture it and put it in a vase and light it, it looks nice and real.

thanks again-
oh, please mail me and I will show you the little tree mesh

maps are standard 3ds max 9 bitmaps, I used arch&design mental ray matte finish with bitmaps for diffuse, namely grass for leaves and barke for wood parts. should be easy to prepare in 6-10 min.
