View Full Version : The Hapless Hero/Villian - Rhonedog
MikeRhone 03-13-2003, 07:44 PM Its about time I got my act together and entered one of these challenges.
I havent decided on the hero or villian side of the coin yet, but for now he is Captain Leprosy! He strikes fear in the heart of his enemies by ripping his own arm off and beating people with it. His stamina is low due to high blood loss and lack of available limbs.

Any design suggestions for this guy? I know I can't use PaintFX for the hair, but I think its sparse enough where Ill be able to think of something easy geometry-wise.

I still dont know if I'll be able to put in the time to finish this one. With all the skilled entrants this time around I know my thread will quickly be lost in the swarm of everyones updates. If nothing else its good motivation to keep on top of Leroy... aka Captain Leperosy.

Leroy's Back Story
Leroy is famed for being the only Leper to ever try and pickpocket Jesus. With a handfull of stolen peanuts and an old bus transfer, Jesus kicked Leroy squarely in the ass and sent him flying. Leroy awoke a few hours later in a daze, and saw the world through new eyes. The angry beating Jesus had given him had inadvertantly given Leroy super Leper powers. After gobbling up the peanuts, Leroy decided to turn over a new leaf... From this day forward, he would be a Leper for Justice!
Captain Leprosy
Likes: Justice.
Dislikes: Playing Red Rover.
Strengths: Can rip appendages off and use them against you.
Weakness: Loses apendages regulary. Bleeds a lot. Low stamina. Low self esteem. Tattered rags for costume not very intimidating. Girls find Leprosy to be a "Turn off". Has a bad credit rating. Lost a movie at Blockbuster, and now they are starting to phone him every 3 days or so.

No update yet. :surprised
I need some help deciding what I should do for the eyes. http://www.wingman.ca/cgtalk/theeyeshaveit.jpg
I am leaning towards the pitable, pained look in "F". Its almost an innocent Disney style, but I dont think Disney has delved into the body mutilation genre yet.
I've been looking at eyes for hours and I couldnt come up with anything I liked yet. Can anyone give me an idea?
Thanks!

I've been following. Thought it was a little morose at first, but it deffinetly has the potential to win; people have sick sinces of humor.

Morose (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=morose) ? I hade to look that one up in the dictionary... But thanks!
I dont know if I i'de agree I have the potential to win, but im flattered someone likes it. There are a ton of amazing modelers and texturers in this challenge, so I will try and keep up. I'm going to do my best to keep this character as "Stylized" as I can.
Thanks peeps. Im going to work on the eyes asap!

Man... I just read the topic of the challenge and thought to give this one a try... Can you believe that even before I had a chance to sketch my idea out, I ran across someone already sketching it?
What can I say? I like it... Even thought you plucked the idea out of my head! :)
Your skecthes look better than what I'd started thinking of though. heh.
As for my suggestion for the eyes... Use "F" on the left side and leave an empty socket on the right...
Stimpy
03-19-2003, 09:39 PM
w00t for "stylized".
i really like your character a lot, this kind of stuff is harder to do than realistic heads, but looking very nice so far.. you did a very nice job on that one. *patpatpat*
MikeRhone
03-21-2003, 09:19 PM
Thanks for all the feedback so far...!
Stimpy: I've always prefered cartoony anyways. I only model realistically if I absolutely have to. :)
Philthebottle: I had that happen to me in a challenge before as well. Almost the exact same idea. Its creepy, because it shows how hard it is to be truely creative and original. (I'm just glad I posted my leper first hehe) I refuse to look at any entries whatsoever before I enter so my mind isnt be tainted by the other models.
Anyways, Sorry its been so long since I posted an update. I have started work on the body, but I have come to the conclusion that anatomy is a lot harder when you also have to take into account underlying bone structure. I'de rather model an Arnie than a Bruce Lee. Well, here's the head so far:
http://www.cgchallenge.jpg
Im going to need lots of feedback when it comes to the body. Im also really stuck for costume ideas. I know I want him to be in tattered rags, but I'm still unsure of exactly what kind of rags I should go for. Are there any costume designers in the audience? :surprised

That is awesome.
Very nice indeed! I love the contours and design of the face. Really very well modelled!
I would suggest some kind of mummy-like stained rags. Maybe look for refrences like the leprosy-pit in The Bible Story movie, or even The Life of Brian.
I think this model is brilliant so far. I can't wait to see the body and the gruesome textures!

Upon harassment from Stimpy in the IRC room, and after relentless insults from everyone saying that I only use poser, heres an update:
http://www.wingman.ca/CgTalk/Quickie.jpg
I've tweaked the ear, added some wrinkles, fixed the eyes, tweaked the head and slapped on a cheezy GI/FG light rig just for show.
Stimpy: I lowered the MickJaggerAttr; by about 95%.
Stimpy
03-23-2003, 03:06 PM

Hi Rhonedog................:wavey:
Well let me say I am a very big fan of the "Stylized" or Caricature look. That look somewhere inbetween the real World and the toon World. This being said you can see I like your creation very much. It's got me laughing and interested.
Leprosy is nasty, flesh and body parts are always falling off. Perhaps one empty eye socket. I would keep the other as wide open as possible. With his current expression the eyes would be very wide open.
I'll check up on you as you up-date,fine WIP thus far.Looking very nice.
MikeRhone
03-26-2003, 08:39 AM
Thanks peeps!
Virtuso: Im contemplating the level of grossness im going to take this. I dont want to go too far though ;)
Gremlin: The adams apple will be gone. After working on the body, im not sure the neck suits the body thus far.
A quick WIP of the body. I had a few hours this evening and thought I'de give it an attempt. I intend to model the ribs, not use bumpmaps. The neck area in particular is giving me some troubles.
Modelling bones underneath loose skin is proving to be a little problematic. I havent started on the arms or stomach at all. Only the neck, back and chest.

No problem sheeps. I know how it is after you've been looking at the same model for hours. :p
Im desperate for feeback right now. :surprised I've started on the ribs and upper arms, and I need to see if people think im in the right direction. This is my 2nd attempt at ribs today, and even though I have 4 anatomy books right in front of me, I dont think they look right.

Note: Thx for the tips Kogepan and Stimpy :)
If there are any anatomy gurus out there, I need your help! I'de just like to know if I should take another clean crack at modelling the ribs, and also an opinion on how the shoulder-to-arm is looking so far.
Thanks peeps!

Hey dog!!. Your character is looking great! Have you plans for bandages? As for anatomy, the head is stylized anatomy so perhapes the ribcage should match the style of the head instead of realistic. I think the ribcage you have there is a good start...now it needs some ribs :)..!! great work man! keep it up!!

FETUS! I just missed you in IRC!
Stimpy: I call extortion on your ass! I've re-posted the original attempt so people can see what I changed :p
Here are the ribs I have so far. I am still attempting a stylized look.... Am I headed in the right direction? I will bandage him up soon, so dont worry about the un-modeled stomach and hips.
Looking at these screen grabs I now realize I have messed the shoulders up a bit. Ill fix them up tonight, but for now I need to make some hands for this guy. I'm also going to give him man-boobs with sickly nipples.

sternum should be alot higher... plus the ribs need more curvature i think. but keep tweaking, i think prominent ribs are one of the hardest things to model

Mangled: Thx man :)
Killah: I love getting crit. I'm finally listening to people and I re-did the ribs for a final time. I think Stimpy convinced me that i was "Over thinking" he ribs. I've decided to go for a softer subtle aproach to the ribs, and I'll hint more at the underlying bone structures with textures.
Krugar: Thx for the ref footage. I've studied pages of Anorexia and Bulimia galleries, and I've come to one conclusion: ribs don't look right to me in real life either :surprised
I've made the hands, redone the chest and slapped them all together. (For the record this was my 3rd attempt at the ribs.) Im trying to go a little cartoony with the limbs. I also have some deep gashes on the hands where the flesh has rotted away to the bone.
http://www.wingman.ca/CgTalk/LeroyPost2.jpg
Yet to do:
-Backbone
-Brow, lips and chin need to be refined
-Gashes and sores on the body
-Clothing. (Im still open for ideas. Im thinking lots of bandages)
-Legs, feet and one leg brace.
-Various leprosy props.
Suggestions and crit please!
Mike R
Stimpy
04-05-2003, 08:49 AM
good job on it. i am totally happy with it. i think you found a nice cartoony style, without going over the top too much.
maybe accentuate the ribs on the side a tiny tiny bit, showing them off a bit more, but well... just a dumb suggestion.
Virtuoso
04-07-2003, 12:01 AM
It's coming along quite well Rhonedog..........
Well my thoughts............The hands could use more of a size gain.Make the knuckles a bit more "Gnarly" mishapen, protrude out a bit more, minor touch but I think could have a better outcome in the end.
A couple of the ribs could be sharpened a bit, more defined, sharper, have them stick out a bit more as Stimpy suggested.
As for bandages I think I like the idea of tattered clothes more.Bandages would make him too much like a Mummy, not Captain Leprosy.
The lower lip could be made a bit smaller.I like the idea of a leg brace for one of the legs. For the fact that he may have lost the use of one of them due to leprosy.
I think that the backbone could stick out more.It would be more intense and scary/interesting to see the individual bones pulling up through the skin.
Well just some thoughts. For the time being you have a lot of potential with him.And thus far it's looking good.I think with more fine tuning and tender lovin care you will have a great creation.Keep going with him,it's one of the better entries thus far.

Thx for the tips peeps! No suggestion is a dumb suggestion Stimpy. I always need your fresh eyes to let me know when Im off track.
Thanks for the heaps of idea Virtuoso. I will be "boney-ing" up the back for sure, and defining the ribs a little more though the side to the back. I am going ot try and "rip off" some flesh from the front to expose some ribs. Stress on try :p
Im going to do my best to give this a good shot tonight. Last night was a rough night for me, so my speed, skill and overall demeanor are all shot today.:surprised

I've been following this one for awhile.. I'm glad you went with a more toned down ribcage. The scapula and collar-bone.. MAN that's creepy! I'm hoping the legs are just as sick, maybe a bone breaking through the skin or a knee-cap sloughing off? :D

love the look of the legs for sure. only thing bothering me a bit right now is the difference in style between the hands and legs.. while the hands look totally skinny and boney, the feet look a bit on the chubby side.
tho i have to say i prefer the look of the feet to the one of the hands. could fit in nicely into the whole character (if we could get a look at the whole shebang ;) )
so, with this said: good luck finishing this. go go go #1
