ok, i'm in for this one, my first challenge. in college we had a big whiteboard in our dorm, and every week or two we'd create a new 6 to 10 panel monty python-esque comic (with stick figure art) detailing our heroes exploits, which had to do with the secret lair under the dorm and bob the prozac-popping janitor. time to think back and figure out which character i want to do...

ok, introducing...well, a bit of real-life backstory first. one year in college i had a roommate who was a BIG guy, like 6'4" and 300+ lbs (not exaggerating). i'm a very average size guy, skinny and about 5'9" or 5'10", so there was a big contrast between us. he kept our room really cold and i'd always turn up the heat, a constant conflict that was always entertaining and never a malicious thing, but one that all our buddies knew about. one day one of our neighbors spouted off with some superhero comment, and the heroes used in the aforementioned comic strip were born: PolarMan and TundraBoy!

i'm going to sketch both of them but planning to do TundraBoy at this point (tho that may change). they live in the IceCave underneath their dorm, PolarMan is a big hero type in a hooded jacket and mask, cool icegun and lots of neat gadgets. TundraBoy is...well, your typical sidekick, you're not quite sure why he's there except to be a sidekick (even tho he wants his own show). he's got a big parka that sort of swallows him up, mask barely visible inside the big hood. big bulky snowboots and snowpants stick out from the bottom of the coat, sort of looks like he's wearing his older brother's clothes that don't quite fit him yet. his logo is boldly emblazoned across his chest. and he's always cold :D

sketches soon...

ok, after some long delay, a few sketches. my first attempt:

this is what i think of as "tundayboy's mental projection of his digital self" :D its far more heroic-looking and athletic than he really is, i want him to be more awkward, bulky (in clothing), and average. i did a few quick sketches working on proportions after this one:

the right one is closer to what i'm thinking but not quite it yet. the closest thing i can think of to compare is randy, the little brother in a christmas story, when he's all bundled up in his snowsuit and can't put his arms down :D gonna work on some more sketches, if anyone's got thoughts/ideas/crits fire away. thanks.

Puffy is good! Go puffy!:D

Great contrast of characters. I hope you can do both!

i like the puffy idea too, thanks erilaz. did some more sketching and got the general proportions i was going for, so here he is:

i want him to look like he might actually have some hero ability in there somewhere, but its so tucked under layers of fluff that he couldn't do much with it if he wanted to so he's stuck as a sidekick :D

and now its time to model...this may not be pretty...more soon...
