View Full Version : The Hapless Hero - Character - Cikala
Cikala 03-13-2003, 06:57 PM I'm in on this one :)
*ponders about a really stupid hero*
Post-It Note Man!
Saving the world by reminding other people to save it! This relatively weak hero uses his super powers to remind people to do things like "walk dog", "do laundry", and "fight crime"!

i think the vacuum guy has some potential...he might actually be trying to rid the world of dirt himself and just sells vacuums to pay the bills (after he's beaten the bad guy: "by the way, i couldn't help but notice this nasty dirt build-up on your carpet. have you ever considered...")
or he's a vacuum repair guy, in combat his vacuum always breaks down and he pulls random tools off his utility belt to fix it.
keep going, interesting concept...

Good choice...I think post-it-note man would be the coolest!

Quick side and frontal(ish) sketch :)
Edit: And yes, I know I can't draw. So if you want to flame me about my lack of drawing ability, don't bother.

lol, I think my drawing scared everyone away from this thread :P
I pray that he uses the gum based residue of kindness!

You should give him the same personality as the disgruntled guy in "Office Space".
In your final render, be sure to have post it notes everywhere with silly safety reminders. Put a Post-It on a cat that says "Dont feed me poison." And "Don't eat me" on pile of dog poo.
I can't wait to see what you come up with :)

His cape is made of post it notes :)
Don't have a pose worked out, but the final render will have lots of post it's in it :D

Great concept
Are you going to make his outfit all yellow, like the post-its? You should make his cape so that it is actually constructed from thousands of them all stuck together :D
The model looks like it is off to a good start - keep going! :bounce:

Oh.. um.. I guess that post got deleted.
As for the concept image, that really is pretty terrible. I guess if you have a good idea of what you're going for already that the concept you posted can be excused, but wouldn't it be more productive and helpful for you to put some more effort into trying to make it look better? It's obvious that it was scribbled in MS Paint or some rudimentary equivalent.
What I'm saying is, concepting something out like that would be a really great opportunity to develop your drawing skills, which matter to general artistic sensibilities a lot more than you may realize. Just a thought.

Jon , if you have nothing constructive to say , dont say it , its that simple.
You can PM me if you have anything to say
We do not tolerate insult against other members and that kind of behaviour will get you banned from this site faster than you can type CG Talk.
I want to see NO further discussion about that. Please keep this thread clean.
Your model is coming along nicely cikala.

funny how so many tear into ppl yet show nothing of their own to back up that they even know anything of the subject
sadly even if you did I would care less, try learning some tact
you'll make no friends like this
now back to the topic, the model is coming along nicely
looks like your improving quite a bit :)
cheers

To Jon Jones:
No, it was done on a Wacom tablet in Photoshop. I'm terribly sorry that I can't draw as well as Michelangelo!

Really? Um... wow I guess.
I'm not criticizing you for not being the best, I'm just saying that it doesn't even look like you tried. There are a lot of really great books on drawing and anatomy out there, such as "How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0671530771/qid=1047872173/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-9336749-1267121?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) and "Dynamic Anatomy" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0823015513/qid=1047872213/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-9336749-1267121) that I think you could really benefit from reading.
I don't really know what to say in regards to the image specifically. I mean... there's hardly even anything there to comment on. Maybe work on establishing consistent volume between the body parts of the character? Drawing in more muscle definition? Learn anatomy? Work on drawing in perspective? There's so much that's missing there that all I can really suggest is to read those books.
Frankly, I find it baffling that everyone so far (except Samurai, who was apparently deleted and banned?) has been supportive and even praising the image. Even Leigh, whose work I respect said that it was "great" without bothering to offer any constructive advice. I don't think people realize that encouraging the artist here without providing any constructive feedback is extremely hurtful to their development as an artist. Usually when I come across something like this, I see it, and know it's bad, and try to come in, say so, and help if I can. I think that's more helpful and respectful than empty and probably undeserved praise... I know that if people had done that to my work, I would NEVER have gotten anywhere. So I try to respect young and new artists, and do for them what I wish even more people had done for myself.
Anyway, I hope that was constructive, and won't get me deleted or banned or something.

Cikala, your torso looks great so far! I really hope your end result turns out good (and it looks like it will) because it will be an inspiration for all of us non-drawers out there. I've tried drawing but I too am not good, not that that prevents me to spend all my time doodling :) . People say that if you cannot draw, you cannot model so prove them wrong. I'm gonna try learning to draw better though. Good luck!
I don't think that made sense
Jon Jones

Is that so?
Okay, in that case, then this is probably the book you need:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0874774241/qid=1047873148/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/104-9336749-1267121
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I've heard amazing things about it, how it can take people that can't draw at ALL and turn them into decent artists. If nothing else has worked for you, then this book may be the one for you. :)

Jon ,
Your edited post is most welcome and thanks for the constructive comments you gave. No one is saying you cant say anything but good things about an image.
Samurai on the other hand flat out insulted cikala which is the reason why he is banned.
hope that clear things up.

Post It Note Man will have peg legs as his excuse to not save the world himself! His other power: hopping.

As a matter of fact, I speak to Cikala on msn a lot, and gave him a lot of constructive advice that I thought would be useless to repeat here ;)
And when I said "great concept" I certainly didn't mean the image, since the image is obviously not there to be critted.
And since the model at that point was really a very basic start, there wasn't much to comment on. I already spoke to him on msn and told him what I thought of it.
Cikala, the model seems to be coming along okay, although you are still having notible rolls along the torso, which really still look a bit odd. You should try and rough out the forms present in a persons torso in this model - the ribs, the abs. There shouldn't be that broad band across the torso below the ribs as you have it.
A word of slightly harsh constructive advice: don't waste time with GI renders when all you have is this part of the model. GI renders are ideally for showing off the intricacies of a model, and since your model is currently not much more than the beginnings of a torso, setting up a GI environment and rendering it out as such is really a waste of time.
Rather spend your time concentrating on your model, and getting it done than worrying about lighting setups and stuff now.
It's also difficult to really see your model too well at the moment because it is rather small on the new renders.
It would be nice to see a wireframe :)

Jon im sorry thats just wrong i to dont try on my concepts mostly id be workign on the 3d thats what counts.... sure i have the clear image in my mind of what i want thats all that really matters spending 10 hours to sit and draw out a perfect image for you is 10 hours that could have been put towards the 3d.....
As far as the model is going its coming nice i really like the definition!

I must say, i almost closed the thread after seeing that concept but then i read "first human and lightwave character" so i gave him a chance :D
for a first character, i think its comin along great. you should make those "peg legs" kinda like those brass fittings that close envelopes and things...the ones that bend down yknow? You may even already be goin for that because thats what they look like, just maybe make the base a little thicker. its great that you talk to leigh cuz you will learn a ton about texturing from her :applause:
if you don't know alot about texturing in lightwave, tho, i definitely wouldn't suggest starting out on this character. good luck with your challenge!

Dude, the whole point of what I said was to encourage him to learn and improve, because it's not like he has anything to lose. You make it sound like making an effort to try to improve your art whenever possible is a BAD thing. I don't know about you, dude, but I try to push myself further all the time, every chance I get. I understand if there are time constraints but I would *never* consider an artistic endeavor like that a waste of time, even if it was just a joke.
The model is actually coming along a lot better than I'd expected from the first image you posted, Cikala.
