Hey, another sketchbook. What are the odds?

I'd just like to thank my wife, the beautiful Sandra, for not ever giving me brain damage for turning up at home late because I was in drawing another pic of Hellboy or a chick with oversized breasts, or whatever. I mean it's not like there ain't a Wacom on the home PC etc etc. I digress.

Comments and feedback welcome from all. Likee? No likee? Boo you suck Al, give it up? You're a god and I must have you? Please rate me or post a reply, I love feedback despite rarely giving much of it myself. It's not 'cause I'm lazy, I just figure it's none of my business, oddly enough.

Classically, I'm not real good at the whole online community thing, so if you've ever posted a favourable remark and been affronted by my total lack of response, I apologise profusely, and I'll remember you in my dreams...

First ever entry into the DSG, was trying to be clever with the whole paper texture thing. Anyway, mythological starcrossed lovers look great in sepia.

Continuing with the Camelot theme, a sketch of the old man and his apprentice. Did a colour version, it kinda sucked. Not shown. On the original post attempted to show my literary knowledge by using the celtic spelling 'Myrddin'. What a wanker.

So Paris gets 45 days. Hard time.

The chances that the experience would even approximate the discomfort of say, having to work for a living in a job you actually like, are remote indeed. But it's nice to think she'd learn something.

Out of curiosity, Caveat, what would be the hit and miss ratio in terms of published to unpublished in your experience?
I know from experience in the toy industry that we're pretty happy if 2 of every three get well placed.
I was also wondering how far through the development process you can get before a game sometimes reaches that never going to happen stage?

Thanks for the support Matt. I think its enormously important for a commercial illustrator to be able to satisy the needs of any client who come to them for a visual solution. Constant experimentation with different styles will also ensure that your love of the process endures.

Or, to put it another way, I get bored easy. BTW, I actually became an art director by accident. Long story. Love your sketches, you've got a great touch with the pencil.

I notice that too. The rough guys seem to emanate such. Maybe focus upon using the "biggest brush possible" mantra as they say when working down into the details? I find life is lost as soon as I noodle the specifics. Just a thought ;)

Cheers Lowcorsa- keep it up.

Self-portrait. I'm a bit softer than this in real-life, but I didn't use any reference, and I thought the foreshortening was quite good. For those who've been following the thread, yes, I got a haircut.

It's been a long time since the Mad Hatter's tea party. Alice is all grown up now. Alice is a bad, bad girl.

whoa nice portraits Al. Love the hair of Alice, especially the flowing bits below her eye... come to think of it the entire piece's style dictates such freedom and flowyness. outstanding

And for the self portrait? amazing form and efficiency. Evokes a sense of hopefulness good work!

Cheers,

great stuff Al. if i may ask...how are you inking those? all in Photoshop? looks really nice and clean, i particularly like lady death. the slightly colored inks are great. in fact, the whole rendering style looks really slick, clean and stylish. it just fits perfectly. well done, really love it

Thanks for the boost jpedro- this is all done in photoshop, I prefer an elliptical calligraphy brush for the linework, I do it all in black, then adjust the colour after all the fill detail is complete.

Just can't help myself. Somebody let me know when this gets old. Do a backflip Lara! There's a cake in it for you!

That's a funny lara.
Some double or triple chin after cake?

On a not so funny side the actress who once played her seems to be thinner than ever lately so the mags claim.

Wow, sexy corpulent girls! It's really hard to pick a favorite. I'm anxious to see a superheroine catfight :)

By the way, awesome technique, if I didn't hear it from you, I would swear these were Illustrator pieces.

This is too much fun. The original sketch had DareDevil in it going 'Hmmm... that can only be the Hulk.' But that would have been unkind. And would have taken longer. Anyhow, thanks for the feedback, chubby-chasers. Power girl eh? Any other requests?

These seem to be striking a chord with a few people, the process and the subject matter both. Have already been asked about a tute, anyone else want one?

Anyhow, in response to other requests- Power Girl, and a catfight.

Couldn't have put it better - great works Al!

The plump ladies crack me up. My buds jokingly wish they could hookup with them...

Your rendering on the last is super clean, and I like the glow from the earth (solid). Watch the light direction and casted shadows. The lifted blue boot seemed a little bright causes a bit of a mixup of ligements in the middle. Maybe a lift of supewoman's grabbing elbow would help place her hand and connect her arm. Likewise, maybe have whitey's fingers clutching SuperWoman's muscle below the shoulder? Just some thoughts, push that silhouette!

And yo a tutorial would be awesome! As they say when you give you begin to live ;)

cya!

Great thread, I was enjoying those , how shall I put it, large super heroines and lmao and then.... I opened the nest page and there was ELEKTRA, and I was like oh no you didn't...then I saw a flash of white and something broke in my retina's and I think I threw up in my mouth a little. It was almost the same feeling I got when they first Killed her off in in the comics, well if you can't tell I got a thing fo her! LOL !
