Dreamwave
03-15-2003, 12:41 PM
why would he do that?
Since I've seen him busy in the other challenge I think he does this more because he likes doing it than going for the prizes...
gom3z
03-15-2003, 01:07 PM
Exactly ! Dreamwave knows the real strike... the guy comes here to have fun.
The similarities... this is certainly due to his style of modeling.
About the textures... well this is a WIP, ain't it ?
I reckon there is some jealousy going around here... that's pretty sad !
Strike > keep it up !
rolhionjs
03-15-2003, 01:34 PM
ok ok calm down ... first like Dreamwave and Gom3z said : i don't play to win prizes... LOTR challenge was supposed to be the last one for me, but when i saw the fun of this one i couldn't resist. So yes it's for the fun ! Like challenges were in beginning.
Come on guys !! we're not here to win absolutely, but here to HAVE FUN ! I think that's the point of challenges, and you don't have to forgot this...
For the character texturing and modeling : well... i maybe found my new style ? I really like to model in this way my characters and textures as well. So what ? should i change my style each challenges ?
Thanks for all your comments guys ! :)
FUN POWER !
KingMob
03-15-2003, 03:46 PM
aw, strike we love you, don't change a thing man!
damn right no one should enter this stuff to win... if you hvae a blast doing it and have a solid peice for your reel that's more than enough for me!
I dig the style on this guy a lot, actually...I can't wait to see him in full glory.
what baout giving him a big black trash bag as a cape? you know those big industrial strength ones? might be kinda cool?
anyways good stuff...now don't slow down, I want to see more stuff from you now!

yaw :) thanks KingMob :) ! i even didn't congrate u for your last challenge : so i do it now :) You did a fabulous work and i hope this one will be the same for you ! :) thanks my friend
About your idea of a trash bag : gosh it rules !!! In fact i want to equip him of many house clean accessories, like a big vaccum cleaner as gun, some restroom suction disc, toilet brush cleaner, you know all those things of the life day. I think i'll wear him like a bug killer, with this kinda worker clothes, and your idea of the bag really fits with that ! :) thanks !
here's an update but without the same kinda render, because of the time it goes to...

Hickory 2.5 : here's a wireframe
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/poubelleman_006.jpg
I use Lightwave 3D 7.5 for both modeling and rendering. I generally model from one poly and using PozExtender plugin to create my mesh, and sometimes i start from a box or a ball and then dragging the good part, subdividing polys, moving points, etc...
For texturing, i used UVmaps for the face in color, specular and bump channels. Just export my UV working on it under photoshop and import in LW.
For the eyes i model a real one : globes, iris, pupils and textured with light incidence angle added with some procedurals.
For the "marcel" shirt, i used a real clothe picture that i put in the bump after desaturate it.
For colors i used procedurals to simulate dirtiness :
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/poubelleman_007_.jpg
bigger version here (http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/poubelleman_007.jpg)
I used VIPER the preview surface render in LW, to adjust those different layers, and it avoids to render each time to have a vision of the full shirt. Very fast texturing in this way. In this t-shirt i have 4 different procedurals for the color map, and just one in bump.
voilà... :)

I still haven't posted feedback on any entry this time... but I just couldn't let this one go. Boy that's great modeling!!!!!!!! Would love to see more!
2 questions:
a) You modeled an anatomically correct eye rather than a textured sphere? Why? How? ( I guess I know why... that one is a rhetorical q... I really want to know how though). and...
b) I'm just making the move (or at least attempting to) from EIUniverse to Lightwave. So here is a LWnewbie q... what is PozExtender? Sounds like a cool tool to have. How do I get it? Is it compatible with LW7.0?
Anyway... cool work man! Hats off.

I'm really amazed by the work you are chucking out at the moment...
I have a couple of questions if you don't mind :-
How do you go about mapping your models, UV's and if so what UV editor do you use if any along with procedural maps ???
You have a good grasp on creating natural lighting, how do you go about setting up your lighting scene ???
just one thing I have noticed tho' and that is there are some AA issues but apart from that :top dollar: :applause:
PS. Hand scale looks spot on now

Nice up-date Strike.Details are coming along much smoother.:)
However I think he needes even more grease, dirt, filth, more exxagerartion to become the true and one and only "Trashman"...............;)
Introducing Billy Bob Thornton from the movie U-Turn..................
http://movieweb.com/movie/uturn/co4.jpg
Yes more dirt, grease, and grime. ;)

Samartin : Well i used UVs just for the head, and puting on another layer, some procedurals for dirtiness. I don't use any UV editors, except Photoshop to create maps.
For the rendering nothing special : just radiosity, and some area lights, one left, one right with different intensity.
Dirk_P_Ho : well i'm still working on it ;) thx
DimitrisLiatsos : thx ! but i must improved it to get a better result ! :)
Capel : thanks man ! I really like your works, a great honor you post here :)

I really love this character. I've been watching him the whole way through. You really have some great character design skills.
If I were to offer one bit of critique, I would say that his overalls are not baggy enough. I remember in my highschool automechanic days I'de be swimming in my overalls. I also think you need to add more than just one type of dirt to his suit. Right now he only looks dry and dusty. A typical messy auto class suit would have the following:
-Fresh oil stains. (Black)
-Lube from the lube gun. (My biker gf in the class shot me in the ear with it once.)
-Kitty litter stains on the ass (From cleaning oil spills)
-Rust around the cuff (From working on crappy cars.
-Safety Goggles (For protecting me from afformentioned rust.
-Duct tape (The ultimate mechanics tool)
-Various pens in his upper pocket. (Not like I did much writing)
I should also mention that I never knew anyone to wear a belt on thier overalls. He does, however, need some props. Like a screwdriver, a wrench, a Jerry can, some duct tape, a lube gun, an air drill, an aerosol can, a car tire, some fuzzy dice, a windshield wiper, a clipboard, a doughnut and some coffee, a hacksaw, a car axle... Anything that exagerates his mechanic-like character.
Keep it up...! I love it.

ok, nice model!
a few questions,
how do you model? poly by poly, boxmodeling, splinemodeling?
what's the polycount thusfar ?
what are your smooth settings? (I think less than 89.5)
oh, and can you post a wireframe?
rolhionjs
04-02-2003, 09:22 PM

Well about the shoes, i wanted to have something massive for this girl, so i choose a kinda SF design, to kick some butts ! :)
I have to work on it again but here are wireframes :
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/_femme005.jpg
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/_femme006.jpg
I generally model poly by poly by using in Lightwave PozExtender plugin, or just Bevel.
7277 polys for the pants and belt + shoes
About smooth settings : it's 89.5, but using some airbrush on some parts to have sharpen polys.
:)

It's nice to see trashman has a lady friend. And a fine one at that.Nice shape, nice modeling with the boots, and pants along with the vest.
Maybe you can enlarge the hands a bit,and give the tip of her nose abit more of an extension for a more appealing look.....but that's just a style preference,up to you on that Strike, not a modeling crit.
All in all you are doing very good with two more creations,Bravo,I think they are worthy additions to your growing collection.
Now give us a storyline on her, does she have a thing for Trashman?;)
Very well done,I look forward to more.

Only thing I can think of is her lips and nostrils look slightly flat in side view..

Nice scene :bounce: , looks like a quake map I know
So the woman is gone, trashman is back?
Or the woman is the doll?

:bounce: .::STRIKE::. ..i don't know if this is what u are going for ..but your last update has a dramatic storytelling and impact to me....Is the baby going to try to smush the litle lady...and trasman loves her and he is going to save her life?...Such a dramatic turnaround in your story....

thanks guys :)
Well yea, fatal girl is the doll, and both trashman and her are toys who falled in a villian family :) The baby is a future villian, and he's already hates heroes ^^
In fact, this scene is a basic : Trashman is the hero trying to save the princess from the dragon (symbolized by the baby). I just wanted to finish this challenge, coz i will not have alot of time besides, and the baby was here to contrast between his innocent looking (a baby is always innocent) and his bad mind symbolized with the hammer ready to strike on the doll. If you put off this hammer, then the scene would be just a scene. But the most important is this tool here, giving all the way to the villian baby.
uhmm... don't know if i'm clear ? :p

It is very clear to me. And very well done. I tip my hat to you and all of your efforts both in this challenge and your personal projects Strike, you have been very busy and have been putting out a lot of fine work.
I still hope to see this piece get a final up-grade,a little more attention in the textures,it will give it that extra attention it deserves. Looking forward to seeing you get this piece to the finish line. Very fine thus far.

Animate : Garg !!! my weaknes... I even can't finish my fx challenge :(

Dreamwave, thanks for your help my friend, but the thing is I was asking for some TIPS AND/OR LINKS on creating hair such as that used on STRIKE´s girl model, not which tool did he use, heehhe. I had already read that MAGIC BEVEL part, but unfortunately first of all I am no LWer, Second, I want to learn the technique, not the plug-in. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
STRIKE: if you know of any tutorials on this issue, it would be very much appreciated.
Keep up your AMAZING work!! :applause: :bounce:  :buttrock:
