Hi guys,

I've got a quick question about HDR images in Maya.
Im using some Dosch Sky HDR's. The thing is, the HDR image of a setting sun makes the scene extremely bright red. Ofcourse, the sky is red, but not that red..
I've put the HDR in the IBL and turned on Emit Light. If i mess around with the color gain under Adjust Light Emission Color Effects and I turn that value down, the red gets less, but the lighting becomes less strong too.

So my question is, I would like to keep the lighting strength, but lose the red. How do I do that?

Also, is this the best way to achieve nice HDR lighting? And/Or should I use final gather? Are photons really necessary? (I already kinda like the results without it, except the red ofcourse ;))

As you can see, any other tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
browns

under the Image Based Lighting Attributes tab

go to your color gain

change the H(ue) and S(aturation) until you get a green that's the complimentary colour of the red in the HDRI. tweak until the resulting renders become neutral. then up the V(alue) until the scene is at the brightness you light. if you didn't know this already, you can up the value to as high you want by typing in the number. I have had a project where I had to use up to a value of 35, 40, whereas in the UI the default maximum is only 1.

I don't have much experience with Emit Light and GI so I will leave that to others. but Emit Light can be pretty slow if not optimised well, and you can mannually place lights instead to be more efficient.

Thanks for the reply, mate.
I did my best with it but didn't get the results I wanted.
I must say though, now that I look at it, the HDR's are pretty crappy.. ;)
I'll try and find some better ones.

I assume you use the HDR's in combination with FG?
Does that still utilize the high dynamic range of the images?

Thank again,
browns

p.s. My question about the photons is still open, anyone? I find them very hard to control and setup and everyone I ask (professionals, I might add ;)) says: "Well I dunno.. just uuh.. fiddle around with the settings."

well to really use HDRI in IBL, I always turn on FG, otherwise there is really no point in using them unless you just want to use them for reflections and not illuminating the scene.
