The company i work for will be in the market for new rendering hardware soon and i would like a little feedback on a setup i have worked out. Please feel free to reply here or email me at masterfulninja@hotmail.com .

Tyan Quad Socket Board

Dual core opteron x 4

Corsair xms 2gb per physical processor

Im aware that the general concensus is that multiple cheaper machines are better than a single behemoth but due to the physical size of the building and our 1 man IT dept a single machine would be ideal.

Im also pondering/looking into Raybox ( http://www.artvps.com/page/109/raybox.htm ) and Render Server (http://www.artvps.com/page/102/renderserver.htm )

Once again any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

You can't get Opteron 2xx or 2xxx parts on a 4 socket board. You will need the Opteron 8xx or 8xxx series CPUs. 2xx/x Opterons are only for dual socket boards, the 8 series fit into quad and higher.

It may also be worth it to look into getting two dual Xeon 53xx systems (dual quad cores - 8 cores each). It will perform better and likely be cheaper since a quad socket board is pretty expensive. And 4 dual core Opteron 8xx chips will run you about $6400 alone assuming you bought the top end ones.

Additionally, I would not get the 8xx. I would get the 8xxx, so as to give you some room to upgrade to quad core in the future, should it be needed. Though, finding a quad socket board that takes Socket F Opterons may be a bit of a challange.

The RAM ammount seems reasonable. You will need a 64bit OS and renderer to use it all though...
