Title: Hoth Encounter
Name: Chris Wahl
Country: Australia
Software: CINEMA 4D, Photoshop, ZBrush

A commissioned piece by Acme Archives and Lucasfilm which is currently on sale as limited edition giclee prints.

It premiered earlier this year at The New York Comic Con and Art Expo New York. Mr. Lucas had to approve the artwork at various stages so it was both an exciting and nerve wrecking experience. Apparently he loved the finished result.

A walkthrough of it's creation can be found via my blog.

http://cwtutorials.blogspot.com/2007/02/building-wookie.html

I've been asked to do a whole series of different characters which would be great if I could find time from my regular paid work.

I don't specialise in 3D only, so any critiques are welcome and appreciated.

Very good, but n my opinion would be very better without the weapon, it's confusing the reading of the picture.

I'm especially impressed on how the fur looks. It looks really good.
The snow is a great touch and gives it a lot of atmosphere.

Awesome!, looks great. His expression is rad. As far as crits go I think there are a few things that could make it a stonger image. I agree that the weapon doesn't really add to the picture. At first glance it is hard to tell exactly what your looking at, appearing more like abstract shapes, without a clear idea of what he is holding. The metal objects in the picture seem to have overly sharp edges and feel a bit bland. A slight bevel of the edges and, texture wise, ice build up(for interesting reflections) or rust(to dirty it up) could make the metal feel a little less clean and sharp. Awesome Pic! 4*

Thankyou everyone for your comments, critiques and star ratings. Very much appreciated.

MadnesS- I hear what you're saying, but Chewbacca's bowcaster was an element they definitely wanted to keep in the picture. It's synonymous with his character. But I guess if you're not familiar with it, it's unusual crossbow shape could be difficult to interpret.

Aumukua- The picture included below is the closest thing I have to a wireframe at the moment. For more info about it's creation, you can always check out the tutorial on my blog, titled 'Building a Wookiee'.

My blog- http://www.chriswahlart.blogspot.com/

Bif- I totally agree with you about the execution of Chewie's gun. If I had thought of it (and had a bit more time) I would have added a lot more texturing to the gun. That's one of the main things I would alter.

Saying that, I'm working on an overpainting of one of the canvas prints which is going to be sold as an enhanced original print to George Lucas (well, he has first refusal rights anyway), so the texturing on the gun is definitely something I'll be enhancing in the paintover.

dickens3d- Heh, yeah the composition has divided a lot of people I spoke to. Some close friends and family asked upon first seeing it, where the rest of the picture was! But out of all the various roughs of Chewie I submitted to Lucasfilm, the cropped version is the one they wanted to go with. Something different I guess.

CGOutcast- Thanks, I agree with your crit. As I mentioned to Bif above about the gun, I'll probably add more texture to the bandolier when I do the overpainting.

here's a compliment, and it's my honest opinion. This looks far more appealing and real than the starwars character (forgot name, sorry). Very nice textureing and the eyes especially.

This is slam dunk 5 stars.

Looks good, but imo too crisp and it doesnt look like he's in his environment. Reading the tut page I can see why, but yea, the weapon looks completely synthetic as its perfect, but mainly the snow on the weapon and chewie himself dont look like its there in actual chunks. Unfortunatly because of this it throws the piece off alot more than originally you'd probably think.

Awesome job!

Only critique I would have is that the fur area where the nose connects with the forehead, and a small bit of the area above the eye looks kind of "less detailed" (or whatever u cud call it), compared to the rest of the piece. Might just be me though! (i realise its the shadow being cast there but looks kinda weird somehow)

Incredible piece anyway overall, thanks for sharing! :)

Walkthrough was interesting too!

edit//

Here's what i meant (hope you dont mind me editing, just say and i'll remove), perhaps the "edge" is too sharp if you know what i mean? (less detailed was definately the wrong word!!), as i said might just be me!!

The crossbow seems more plastic than metallic, but it doesn't really read well anyway. I would just crop it out more. Reminds me of the layout of the Warcraft box covers (with half a face).

I must say this is outstanding my friend, extremely well done. Still if you want it to look more realistic then i would suggest putting some texture onto the metal casings on his shoulder. It looks a little to shiny if you get what im saying. Also that being said it doesn't fit a wooky. If you think about it there not exactly the cleanest of creatures around the galaxy. Still its awesome and i give you **** very well done and i hope to see more great work from you some time.

Once again, thanks to everyone who found the time to comment and critique. It's been a great help.

Before this thread slips off the front page and into obscurity, just a reminder to check back later for the revised image. I worked on it a bit last night, a little bit more to do, so I'll probably have it posted up on Monday morning. Don't forget as I'll be interested to hear what you all think.

Here's a sneak peek of some of the changes so far...

I think that a good way to get around this "problem" you may want to angle his face a tad so its not "just" dead on. This will show some depth and hopefully rid of that flat affect.

AGh! Please disregard that comment. haha. never leave your account open for your brother to use. I think its great. Although I must also admit that angling his face in a different position could help sell the composition. Its difficult because as he's in Hoth. Every thing is covered in snow making the lighting very even. Which is probably the reason why its giving the impression that its flat.

cwahl
05-12-2007, 08:00 AM
Thanks for the tips, fellas.

As this face was constructed to be rendered at only one angle, changing the angle isn't an option (add to that the amount of post-work done after the render).

Saying that, there are a few areas which bug me because of the even lighting. The nose for example isn't casting a shadow. So I'll probably try adding a few 'fake' shadows and see if that makes him pop more.

You did an excellent job there. But if you want to improve even more that's nice.

Your new image has a better contrast and shows better some details.
Your idea of adding fake shadows probably helps to add some depth, adding some specularity to a few strands also may improve this visual.
Anyway let us see the results. It's precious and a pleasure to see your work developing.
