Right its my turn to challenge you lot after the 12 tri contest...
As you can see the theme is "It's Aliiive! Mwahahahaha!!!"
i want to see anything that you see fit to suit the theme, weird creations, mad professor inventions, back from the dead zombies anything you can think of, the more gory, scary and violent the better in my opinion and as i get to judge it then id stick by that if i were you :)
but i must stress, NO frankenstein rip-offs, bonus points for originality guys and gals.
tri limit: 400 triangles
texture limit: max 1 x 512 diffuse, 1 x 512 spec, 1 x 512 bump/normal
but NO displacement maps coz that just bloody cheating you cheeky monkeys!
-------- UPDATE: I saw the light and there is now a texture limit of 3 x 512 of what ever type you like but still excluding displacment mapping ---------

i kinda cheated a bit, seeing as i cant win (being the creator of the round) by using an opacity map for the spikes (cant think of the real name), but i didnt use either spec or bump (coz i couldnt be bothered basically :) ) so you'll have to forgive me.

anyway after doing my attempt ive changed the rules so you're not restricted by the types of maps you can use, just keep it to 3 maps (any type) and still no displacement

Yup.. it's cause it's in the archive and very few people come here. I think the last one was just posted under WIP Game Art forum.
Grotey, your hedgehog is pretty gross. ;) without it being animated though, it's hard to say whether "Its Aliiive! Mwahahaha!!!" or not. :) Looks kinda dead to me! Anyhow, looks cool.
Swizzle, yours is looking pretty badass too. Hope you finish it!
RockyDsign, keep at it man. I don't have enough time to crit, but it looks like you could save some tris in the head. I'm also wondering what your UV layout looks like, or if you've got one. Right now, everything blurs together with nothing defining the different parts. You could also use 2 alpha maps (one on each side of the hole in the chest) to make it look less jaggy and uniform. Lastly, what's an Orge? ;)
I don't think I'm gonna enter this one.. There's no way I could finish in time. I was on vacation since last Friday and though I've got a decent idea, it's nothing I'll finish in time. Maybe if I have time I'll do something really simple..

Mrgrotey, there's currently only one finished entry besides your own in the contest. How about extending the deadline so that more people can enter? Hell, mindrot looks like he's entering, so we know that there could be some really spiffy stuff coming.
[Note: This is not some ploy to get more time for mine; I probably won't even finish with an extended deadline because I'm way too busy to work on it right now.]

Nice. I think I can enter now. : ) I was hoping it would be extended but due to deadline extension criticism in the past I didn't want to bother bringing it up. I think this case certainly warrants it though!

I've tried 2 ideas so far. The first failed because I couldn't keep it under the polycount, and the second is going badly because I can't rig. So....maybe plan C.

Some really great stuff here guys. Here's my entry. It's based off a dream I had a few years ago where a giant black olive is busting out of an olive can giving birth to baby olives. Not to happy with it but it is what it is. The olive, can and babies are 396tris.

I hear that. I get so caught up in making a character that I want to embellish. Right now I'm about 60% done modeling and I'm at 300+ tris. I hope I can pull it together, but I still have to model the neck, legs, and pelvis, along with maybe adding a tad more detail to the head... I think it will probably have to change from my original concept.
I have a backup, too, but as Grotey said "the gorier and grosser, the better" and my first idea was kinda toony, I went with Plan B.. >:)
Hopefully I'll finish the modelling tonight! If so, I'll post it.

Blacker: It's probably best to not worry much about poly count until you have all the parts or pieces of the model in place. After you've got everything built, then go back and optimize by getting rid of polygons that don't much affect the silhouette. Alpha planes are your friends.

Comments are welcome. I'll try to post my concept sketch tomorrow. I'll probably move on to textures tomorrow, too.
edit: I've made a few tiny changes since this post. I think I'm going to change a bit more to finalise it as I'm not very happy with his lower half. I'll try to strip the top a bit to spend more detail on his legs.. I might have to cheat a bit with alphas, too. :shrug:

I've got my modeling done, now I'm unwrapping. I'll probably begin texturing tonight if all goes well, and finish it up tomorrow.

Sorry to say I've gotta bow out of this. I'm at the texturing stage but just barely in and I'm way too tired to pull my usual hours (till 2 or 3 AM) to work on this. Barring another extension to the time limit, I'm out.
Looking forward to the next MGAC though!

I hope I didn't miss the deadline...not too sure about time zones and whatnot. It's 2 in the morning here, and after thinking I was toast, I got it unwrapped and did some sloppy texture work:P Dreamcatcher says "give us a hug!" :D

Nah you didnt miss the dealine, still nine hrs to go, so instead of using 3x512 maps you decide to go for 4x1024 (16x512) maps? misread it did you? haha. i dont think you'll lose anything by making them all 512 maps and the body spec map isnt really doing much for the model so i reckon you could lose that too to keep it within the rules. looks great by the way, good job.
sooo after 3 full pages of replies, we have a humungous 3 final submissions at the moment! get those mice clicking and submit your creations, as i said before 9 hrs to go.
[edit] by the way where did the other 2200 tris come from in your scene? you haven't used a normalmap, cant make it out.
oh and blacker that sucks, your model was looking real good, shame you cant finish it was looking forward to that one

Seams up the wazoo, weird mirroring, and distorted knees, ntm blood all over the place. It's my baby. I ditched the lousy spec map and re-sized to 512 to stay within the rules.
*all those other tris in my scene are junk pieces, higher-poly iterations of the same mesh on different layers, a ground plane, and who knows what else. This mesh is 400 tris, though :)

It looks pretty cool but I'm confused. Is your bottom right map both color and transparency? Doesn't seem right.. I thought alpha maps had to be b&w?
edit: I'm guessing you're still using 3 maps since your previous post had an alpha.
In any case, very nice! I wish I could have finished to give you a bit more competition. I may still post mine, but it will be after the deadline. Probably tomorrow or the next day. All I've textured so far is the skull and it still needs dirtying up.
