View Full Version : low-poly character tutorial I just finished
Athey 05-03-2007, 09:26 PM Hey all. I just finished writing a fairly lengthy tutorial on the process I use at work for making low-poly characters. I just wanted to post it here and see what you all thought. And I figured it'd do some good for the less experienced on the board.

Nice one Athey. Musta taken you a while to compile.
I think a PDF version would also be a good idea for those who want to keep a copy of it on their PCs (beats trying to save every page) ;)

You can download a pdf from my DA page

The link that says "Download" on the left-hand side of the image is the one you want.
I don't entirly like the PDF version ^^; I used a crappy freeware print driver to make it and I think it came out kinda funky, but it'd probably be eaiser for printing / whatever.

A very thorough and well laid out tutorial, especially considering it was done in Notepad. Your work flow mirrors my own almost to the last detail except that I just take whatever UV template I have in Photoshop and set the layer blending mode to "multiply" or "screen" depending on whether it is black lines on white or white on black. I don't usually go to the trouble of deleting all the dead space. I also generally model my hands with the fingers straight to ease texturing and pose them after the fact. Other than those "crits" (more accurately, "microscopic differences"), I can't find anything to fault since, as I said before, your technique matches mine virtually from start to finish.
Well done.

Nice tutorial, Athey.
Using a denim skirt for texturing jeans? Brilliant!
I personally like to drop the whole face photos into my uvs, and then use layer masks to hide/reveal parts of the photo.. pushing them back and forth until I get what I like. The liquify tip is a great one though, for some reason I always forget about that awesome tool.

I'm glad people find it useful, I'm thinkong of making another, just not sure which I should do first - lowpoly terrain/level art or maybe a ps3 spec char tut (normals w/ zbrush. etc)

oh - had another idea - would any of you find a custom facial rig tutorial useful? I've been thinking of doing a tut for that for a while.

I enjoy doing facial rigging and animation - and I'd be really interested to see how you go about it. For sure - do a tutorial on that! If it's anywhere near as nice as this one on character modeling. we're all in for a real treat.
Thanks a lot for posting this fantastic piece of work. I've done a few tutorials myself and I know how time consuming they are. It's extremely generous of you to help out the community with this kind of quality resource.

Very nice and helpful tutorial. Much appreciated!
Excellent tutorial!!! Loved the texture part. Reminds me of the old school ways of texturing.

something next gen ( or current gen I guess now  ) would be great. Normal mapping, cool shaders etc in Max would be good to know! need to find it out for myself asap anyway ;)
