View Full Version : The Hapless Hero/Villian - Character - Erilaz
erilaz 03-13-2003, 12:46 PM Hi all once again! I haven't yet decided on whether my concept will be evil or good, but I want to do a few ideas before I get into it. Dang, but do I get inspired by these things!
So without further ado, here's the first concept. Yes, it's a quick sketch, but I wanted to get a brief idea of what I wanted. I will endeavour to provide you with something a little clearer on the weekend!

hi erilaz, let me be the firstest to reply...
:airguitar
nice concept, like his compactness, make sure you develop detail. make him evil.... evil-good.... nuetral with evil slants
erilaz
03-13-2003, 12:55 PM
Oh, there'll be detail, mark my words (Mark 'em I tells ya!).
As I said, this is a quick outline sketch. I will make a more detailed one as my ideas emerge.

This one came about when sleepy. It's a bit influenced by my tea-obsession, but I'm not sure I want to make anything tea-related hapless!!:D

if anyone actually knows what i mean. :D

samartin: Yeah, a few people have been saying that. When my concept is refined it will appear less that way.
Hexodam: Thanks. Maybe my server didn't like you for some reason!:)
grub: Ahhhh... let the puns begin.:D
Stimpy: You've been reading that "dictionary" way too much Stimp.
I'll have another concept out today sometime! Thanks all!

*groan* gives teabagging a new meaning ;)
good stuff man, I like concept 2 more, cause concept 1 looks very much like ninjai...and he could still be a little asskicker, concept 2 has more hapless feel! good stuff man.

Hey, thanks Kingmob!
Man, do I need a scanner. Digital cameras don't cut it for images.:hmm:
New concept! This is Plumber-Guy. I like the idea of having him constantly getting his plunger stuck to his bald spot or his face.:D

erilaz
03-13-2003, 09:41 PM
Yay! Character! Character is always a good thing to have in a... character!:D
The teaman idea is alright, I'm just not happy about blaming tea for haplessness.:p
And yes, of course, there is the whole thing about consistent teabagging comments that deters me....

Ooohh. Cute little dwarf that plumber guy.
erilaz
03-14-2003, 04:24 AM
Yay! I've been a busy monkey.
First new concept:
NARCOLEPSY MAN! (Although he sort of looks like a drugged smurf...):D

erilaz
03-14-2003, 04:26 AM
Second new concept:
STUPIDLY CUTE GIRL! (Her super-powers are to look cute and disarm the enemy with cuteness.)
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~erilaz/cgchallenge/2003March/cutegirl.jpg
erilaz
03-14-2003, 04:28 AM

Third new concept:
POSE MAN! (All he does is pose in superhero poses. That's it.)
erilaz
03-14-2003, 04:31 AM
Fourth new concept:
SPIDER FISH! (Spiderfish, Spiderfish...swimming aqualike Spiderfish...spins a web, swims about... looks sort of like Supertrout. Look out! It's Spiderfish.)
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~erilaz/cgchallenge/2003March/spiderfish.jpg
erilaz
03-14-2003, 05:52 AM
And while I'm at it, here's a quick lowdown of all my concepts so far:
The Samurai:
Pretty much the samurai was going to be a harrowing tale of injustice and sorrow, but I think I may have to ditch this one due to too many people referrring it to Ninjai. I may do this character at a later date, unless I form more of an idea of him.
TeaMan:
Well, this little man was the child of a worker at the Dilmah factories. One day, he was playing too close to a big vat, and boom! He fell in. He became so infused with tea that he became totally immune to fatigue. He also was able to perform amazing feats of strength with tea related objects and an imperviousness to boiling water.
Plumber-Guy:
This guy was your standard everyday plumber, until he started playng Mario Bros. After that, he became so obessed with the idea of a plumbing super hero, that he decided to use his special powers for the cause of good everywhere. More often than not, he ends up injuring himself, or getting his head stuck inside either his plunger or a random pipe. His remarkable persistence and optimism is the only thing that keeps him going.
Narcolepsy Man:
Actually born with amazing powers of impossible magnitude, he has so much power it's too tiring to wield. He falls asleep in a moment.
Stupidly Cute Girl:
Accidently born in a bucket of pink sugar in the middle of a toy shop, Stupidly-Cute-Girl is so cute she makes hardcore murderers go "Awwwwww."
Pose Man:
Originally a male model, Pose Man stops villians only by stalling them with his amazing array of superhero poses until the police arrive.
Spiderfish:
One day, a geeky fish gets bitten by a radioactive spider. He can now spin webs, flop up walls, swim really fast etc. He realises that with great power comes great aquability.
Hope this helps. I'm going to do a few more concepts over the weekend and then I'll need help in deciding what to do. Comments appreciated!:D

erilaz,
do t he narcolepsy man!!
I hadn't read your thread today, I was walking home from work today and the idea just struck me - *BING* that would be very funny.. a hero with narcolepsy.. thinking if i hadn't already started on the height thing, i would've done it.
I get home, sit on IRC talking to stimpy, and he tells me you came up with it too..
do it do it, cause i'm not;)

spiderfish must be the funniest thing i have seen in a while :D

Thanks for all the responses!!!
Wow, Spiderfish is real popular little aquatic creature isn't he?
Stimpy: Good ol' Haiku! Maybe I could make HAIKU MAN! Narcolepsy man seems to be a favourite. I'm leaning towards him, but i'm not sure yet.
coCoKNIght: Poseman was a quick one. Although he would be fun to rig into ridiculous poses, I'm not sure about him.
BladeFX: Manequin could be cool! But yeah, as I said to coco, i'm not sure about him at the moment.
rockrat: Heee... Gilliam is great. Hey, why don't you do that one?
Carina: I'm liking narcolepsy man. I may work on his concept a bit more. I love the idea of a guy being so powerful he's too tired to do anything!!
Sheep Factory: Really? Spiderfish came up out of a sleepy-hazy inspiration while waiting for my computer to reboot. Maybe I SHOULD listen to those inspirations now and then...
Rye: I agree. Spiderfish is too easy. He will most likely be done if I have time after my main character. Maybe he can be a side-kick. At the moment, narcolepsy man is in the lead!
I'm still working on a few concepts, so stay tuned over the next 24 hours. I won't be able to post my images up until i get home (I'm visiting my parents in Castlemaine), unless Dad lets me use his iMac and scanner!!!
Thanks again for the responses. I'll be back with more soon.

:buttrock: SLUGMAN :buttrock:
Slugman is teh c00lest ever. The best!
I would just make the zip longer so he can get in and out. You know... for the superhero by night, ordinary school caretaker by day.
MikeRhone
03-17-2003, 12:17 AM
Slug man: Good, especially if you are looking to show off some nice Shader work.
Head in a jar man: Funny, but it may come across as a "I didnt want to do a body" sell out. If you were to do a snakey part of a spine it could be really funny.
Useless facts man: Would be funny as a series, but I can't really conceive of how you could get that idea across in a model.
Haiku Man: You know I'de be partial to this one. :surprised As with useless facts man, it might be hard to convey though.
Surprised man: Ok, are you just trying to get in on the Mr. Men series? :p Hehe
Narcolepsy man has my vote though. I think the key do doing that shot would be modeling/texturing as much mayhem as possible around your character, and having him asleep in the middle of it. :)
Keep it up...!

03-17-2003, 01:43 AM
For head in Jar man -why not have a man with a jar or pot on his head that he just can't get off. This could be even more funny if he couldn't see since alls he would do is run around and run into things.
erilaz
03-17-2003, 07:19 AM
Krugar: Yep, zipper would have to be longer indeed! Although it would be funny if he couldn't get out.:D
Rhonedog: I agree with the shot. I'd like to do a before/after shot of him arriving at the scene and then falling asleep at the critical moment.
Dirk_P_Ho: Um.... okay! Oh wait, there's that TIME LIMIT thing. I'd like to do the whole lot as the B-Men.:p
KayosIII: Yeah, but I like the idea of just a head not being able to do anything. It makes me giggle. I am giggling now. Tee hee!
Well, it's come down in my mind to do either Narcolepsy Man or The Slug. I'm still not sure. I like both the characters a lot. Maybe I'll have to do both... or start with one and then get onto the other if I have time. Then there's always Spiderfish, but let's face it, he's too simple. I'll make up a theme song for the character I pick instead! :D
Any particular favourite?

Slugman is teh bomb... O~* <my ascii bomb.
i had a similiar idea like that earlier... i like the costume idea, but maybe you could try to make him actually a slug. so that hes not slow because of the costume, but just IS slow.
anyway... zipper would be cool though as well.. :)

THE SLUG
Dave Marrilow, a professor of entomology genetics, was a leading researcher in the field of slug evolution and medical topology. One evening during a routine analysis, there was a break-in. A large figure attacked Dr. Marrilow, eventually throwing him into a glass cabinet full of the researcher's latest chemical and electrical experiments. The large figure stole something and left without a trace.
The resulting explosion from the experiment cabinet infused Dave Marrilow with the essence of 572 different slugs species. He discovered he was able to excrete a slimy substance that allowed him to stick to walls as well as give him superb muscular strength.
Unfortunately, it also made him think these were the ideal traits for a superhero. He worked late into the night making a suit that allowed him to excrete the substance as well as look like a slug. His research proved useful in making a suit material that used a biological slug-like film over a rubber canvas.
His research DIDN'T prove any use for fashion sense, however, as his costume looked absolutely ridiculous. He also found that in order to achieve the look he wanted, he had completely restricted the use of his arms.
Now, although he can hardly do anything useful in his slug powersuit, he searches relentlessly for the large figure that destroyed his lab while fighting crime along the way. He calls his arch-enemy none other than LARGE FIGURE, and will not rest until the hulking personage has been brought to justice and the fee of $33.50 has been paid for damages to his office.
Stay tuned... same slug time, same slug channel.:D

Once the head gets to a certain stage, I'll leave it and work on the rest of the body. Most of the head will be obscured by the costume, so I'm really only working on the facial area.
Virtuoso
03-18-2003, 09:49 PM
It's coming along well Erilaz.............Since it's just the facial features that will be exposed I would go for an extra "Expressive" look.More exxagerated features.More expansive nose, lips, eyes with many details,bags,wrinkles,etc,etc...

I've been following this thread for awhile, and I have to say that I'm so glad you went with The Slug. All of the concept scketches you were making were all "inside the box", and didn't really fit the criteria of the contest. All of your characters were dependent on their names to explain their flaws/powers; The Slug isn't, and is a pretty marginal idea to go with as you have it. I would like to see more refined sketches before modeling; Is it just going to be a head on a slug's body?
erilaz
03-21-2003, 09:03 AM
Whee! Can do update soon!
derelict: Thanks bud. :)
Clanger: I'm sloooooowly improving on head modelling. It's funny, cause it's actually easier to make a head look realistic than cartoony!
-ed- : By all means, do a snail if you wish! Everybody takes concepts different ways so it would be interesting to see yours!

Here's the basic shape of the suit. I'm going to try and get it looking all suit-like as well as looking like a rubbery mass.

I'm going to try a slimy greenish-brown for it.:D

Looks cool. But to me he's either too tall, or his face is too small.
Looking forward to this one erilaz. Good luck!

The expression on his face is perfect, resigned to his fate.

Tottebias: You're absolutely right mate! I'll shorten him down a bit. Thanks for the comment!
Clanger: Thanks! It's funny, cause I'm starting to like the face the way it's set. I'll be doing a few facial expressions though (I hope!).

Here's the beginnings of the zip. I won't be placing it where I've got it currently, because I want it to be around the back at bit more. Still heaps to do!:D

I don't have my model at work with me, so i'm playing around with texture ideas. Here's a little part-bitmap/part-procedural. Pretty lame, but you get the idea of the green-brown I'm trying.:hmm:
Obviously, this will make more sense when the model is ready to UV map.:wip:

CRANK up the spec on that shader man. Make him slimy as hell!
Banana Slug Reference (http://www.stanford.edu/~andyh/pics2/banana-slug.jpg)
Keep it up, but make sure hes slimy. If I dont see some spec on him soon, Im going to MAIL you a slug.
Random idle threats aside, keep it up. Make sure the zipper is nice and rusty too. Slime rusts zippers... Not that I would know.

KingMob: Thanks King. I stared at my pants for hours to get that zip right!:D
Rhonedog: The slime WILL be slimy, don't you worry Rhone! Thanks for the cool reference too. That slug looks great!
verti: Thanks! :)

Added on some eye stalks. Tweakiness is ahead!:D
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~erilaz/cgchallenge/2003March/slug008.jpg
I'm still deciding whether I want the eye stalks to be melded into the suit like they are here, or if I stick them onto the suit through a hole cut into the head, or stuck on with selotape or something. Staples perhaps?
cool, I really like the eye storks

i think the face kind of gets lost in the costume.. in your sketch the proportions were different which made it look funnier..
i would suggest scaling the face nearly twice as big... cause that would look closer to your sketch

-ed-: Thanks bud (and I hate to be pedantic, but it's stalks, not storks).:)
Stimpy: You're absolutely right! Gimme a few moments, and I'll have that fixed up. Let me know what you think.

There we go!

Is that big enough do you think? I don't want to make the face too big, because it starts to look like a scary version of Thomas the Tank Engine.:surprised
thanks for the correction slug Dude!

Hey, there. This is the first time I've really glanced at this thread and me likes what me sees.
Just wanted to make a note on your character's origin. An entomologist studies insects, not slugs. Last I checked a slug isn't an insect. But maybe this is part of the humor of the story...and in the end, what does it matter? Keep up the good work! :)

-ed- : Not a problem.:) As I said, it's rather picky of me.
Doh Boy: Thanks! You are right about the entomologist thing. It was the closest word I could find. If anybody knows the ACTUAL WORD for a studier of slugs, please let me know so I can update my story. I'm sure it's got to do with molluscs or something, or invertebrates perhaps? I don't know.
If anyone can help out with that, I'd be grateful.:D

Moved the zip in line with the suit and added a ridge to the base for that lippy-foot thing that slugs have. I think now i'm just going to tweak bits and work on the zip a bit more, then get onto some kinda shader work, then back to work on the head.
http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~erilaz/cgchallenge/2003March/slug010.jpg
The more tips the better. I want simple, yet looking good.:D

running down nearly the length of his costume.. on the side... straight down... in a curve... if you know what i mean... like
\

\
\

\
but not following the costume backwards... if its unclear iŽll break out the wacom

Stimpy: I don't think I want the zip to be any bigger. The point it he's not supposed to be able to get out of it! If others say that the zipper needs biggering (hee, I make up words good), the maybe I'll consider.:) Otherwise, I'm not sure if I want to take it to another level of bigness.
mage111: I'm glad I amuse! I will endeavour to make you laugh more.:D

:bounce: Hi Erilaz ....it progresses nicely...just one thought though...put a cloth around zipper surrounding it like in our clothes...just for extradetail !!!....just a thought :bounce:
it could be fun if the zipper moved around on him...every time he went to get out of the suit its in a different place :D really fun concept, this could be a blast to animated. nice work

I've just moved house.
Work is insane.
I am sleepy.
I'm still organising my house, so I REALLY hope I'll get the chance to find some time to finish this guy and put him in some poses for you. Maybe after Easter... :hmm:
Now, back to work!:D
