Hello my name is James Reilly. I am a current graduate student going for my MFA in Animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I would love to hear any feedback and critiques on my demo reel. It has both keyframed and motion captured animation on it. I have done only the animation in the pieces as the models have been either created for me or found online.

Reel Breakdown

Cereal Killers: Keyframed/Maya
Dodgeball: Keyframed/Maya
Fight: Motion Captured/Vicon, Motion builder
The Frank Show: Keyframed/Maya
Are You Ok: Keyframed/Maya

Hi, I’m working on my reel too, and this is a great place to get crits. Anyway, some things I noticed:

-I think that ball hit animation is the best one, so it should be first, to get the viewer’s attention right away. Then I’d put the blue guy dialogue clip next because it’s good too.

-The music overrides the dialogue clip too much.

-The white mustache guy animations seem like it’s the same clip repeating. I know it’s not, but they are so similar, that maybe you should include just one, because the others are kind of redundant.

-I’m not sure what’s going on with the camera shake on the coffee mug guy. It’s kinda distracting and pulls focus away from the animation.

-I really liked the way the guys girly fight, but it takes too long to get to the funny part. I’d merge the last two clips into one, and drop the others, so that it gets to the point faster.

Nice...

I agree the sound over rides the voice a little .. the lip sync could do with polish .. it's a little snappy

the guy with the coffee cup is ok is he ment to be on a moving train??.

there is over extending in the arms of the motion capture clips .. aka the arms snap straight too much making the motion look a little unnatural.

overall it's getting there the motion could just use a little polish thats all. good luck :D

Sorry, I should have explained the camera in that one. The animation was for my Media Theory class and was a parody on those MTV style shows like Cribs and Real World where the camera does not stop moving. It is about how these show try to sell you how extreme and cool these things are through camera work, voice over and editing when nothing is really going on. Here is the full animation if you want to take a look.

Thanks for the other critiques so far though, I definantly need to fix the sound levels for the lip sync.
